Not a new book, but new to me. Maps of Heaven, Maps of Hell: Religious Terror as Memory.

Review…

“The Puritans used terror as a means of conversion, thus linking the recognition of the holy and the acknowledgement of the horrific.”

Sounds familiar.

Claremont Review

There’s a new essay on Lovecraft in the latest Claremont Review of Books. Sadly it’s behind a paywall at present.

clare

But it will probably eventually be available in public, as the Claremont‘s texts rapidly become free as the issues get older. In the meanwhile, Hyperboreans may enjoy this Feb 2014 review essay which rather unfortunately gushes about books that take the “Atlantean Electro-Pyramids Discovered Antarctica!” approach to pre-history. A fun “what if…?” read, but what we know of the real story (and its tantalising millennia-long gaps) is better read up on in the excellent After the Ice: A Global Human History, 20,000—5,000 BC and by learning the hard facts about the recent discovery of Gobekli Tepe.

“The case of these imaginative theorists has not been helped by the action of superstition…”

Has it been that long? I took a two month springtime break from Lovecraft (the best time to do so), in order to do intensive work on my JURN open access academic search tool. Until 2014 JURN indexed only open access (free) academic journals in the arts and humanities. It now also indexes all known open ecology-related journals, open business journals, and biomedical/science. Also most of the main UK academic repositories, and key US and world repositories. JURN’s index was given a thorough spring-cleaning and a deep linkrot cure, along with the same for the JURN Directory of arts and humanities journals.

Many thanks to Kenneth W. Faig, Jr. for sending me a paper copy of his EOD mailing zine, containing his kind reviews of my summer 2013 books. I’m also in receipt of review copies of Steven J. Mariconda’s H. P. Lovecraft: Art, Artifact, and Reality, and David Goudsward’s H. P. Lovecraft in the Merrimack Valley. Thanks to David Goudsward and Derek Hussey for those — I’ll be reviewing those books in July or August.

The Hippocampus Press book H. P. Lovecraft: Letters to Elizabeth Toldridge & Anne Tillery Renshaw (annotated) appears to be shipping now. I mentioned it here last May, when it was set for shipping in August. But it was delayed. Now Wilum Pugmire has a print copy to show on camera, and the Hippocampus Press page for the book has it as available for order.
