Another three Stable Diffusion add-ons

More new(ish) LORAs which may appeal to Tentaclii readers. LORAs being free plugins that ‘guide’ the AI images made with your local install of Stable Diffusion 1.5.

* New this week is the somewhat Solomon Kane-ish Witch Hunters, which by the look of it was also trained with some over-the-top corporate card-art. Still, you can stack LORAs, thus you could blend it with another such as James Purefoy (Solomon Kane) which was trained on movie stills.

* One I missed, from a year ago, CthulhuTECH. Every image, no matter what the subject, becomes somewhat Cthuloid. This one is a LYCORIS, but is used in the same way as a LORA. CthulhuTECH is very well documented, so make sure to click “Show more” and then save a .MHTML page alongside your download.

Also has a cthulhuTECH books add-on as a LORA.

* Looking at the CthulhuTECH maker’s other stuff, I see I also missed his Pulp Ladies – In Spaaaaace. Again, it’s a LYCORIS but could still be combined with a LORA to give the image output a more ‘aged pulp cover’ feel.

Welcome to Arkham

Welcome to Arkham…

is a complete guide to the city of Arkham and the neighboring towns of Dunwich, Innsmouth and Kingsport, detailing 115 fabled locations and featuring more than 500 illustrations.

Appears to be new and a companion to the Arkham Horror board-game, but may also be of interest to Mythos writers. There no hint that it’s a politically-tweaked and polished-up reprint of an older book, as often appears to be the case with Chaosium. I assume there must be maps, but they’re not specified in the description.

Free to read online as a flipbook, so you can see what it looks like inside. Though… my browser couldn’t get past the flipbook’s cookies blocking-notice.

New to me, Lovecraft Quest – A Comix Game (2018). A $2.99 interactive horror game with comic-book art.

Available on Itch.io, and if it’s your first time signing up there then you may also want to look at the acclaimed Anchorhead Lovecraft interactive-fiction. And if you know any young readers, then also pick up the name-your-own-price Call of the Sentinel PDF set for them.

A new podcast on Robert Bloch and the Cthulhu Mythos. I haven’t listened to it yet, but it has encouragingly complete show-notes.

Also new, a sort-of recorded interview with a Lovecraft scholar, “Is it Bobby Derie?”. His words are read by an actor.

Ben Tucker’s new Librivox public-domain reading of “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”.

First appearance of Innsmouth in 1936, first illustration by Frank Utpatel.

Utpatel’s illustration board, showing significant differences from the printed version.

Stable Diffusion 2.1 768 and Lovecraft

Does Stable Diffusion 2.1 768 know what Lovecraft looks like, with a simple name prompt of ((H.P. Lovecraft)) ? After all the hoo-ha about celebrity pictures and name-tagging being removed from the training of SD 2.x? Well… yes, sort of. The results are not bad, considering how few good pictures there are of him. But not great.

Forthcoming: Letters to R. H. Barlow

S.T. Joshi’s blog is back online and has updated. Among the news is a forthcoming (2025)…

volume of Letters to R.H. Barlow. Barlow was in correspondence with a fascinating array of individuals, both in and out of the weird/fantasy/science fiction field, including H. G. Wells, A. Merritt, George Allan England, C. L. Moore, Ernest A. Edkins, August Derleth, and many others. But, aside from his letters to Derleth and to Donald and Howard Wandrei, not many of his own letters survive. The letters he received — many of which are found on a set of three microfilm reels made after his death by his literary executor, George T. Smisor — are full of interesting matter, especially relating to events following Lovecraft’s death in 1937.

Also news of a new two-hour Lovecraft screen documentary from the French, which has so far been seen at “several French festivals”. Apparently an English subtitles version is being prepared. Joshi shows the pleasing promotional poster for the new film.

The Poem

Lovecraft’s long and earliest ‘cosmic’ poem “The Poe-et’s Nightmare” (1916), as an AI generated video adaptation. The project…

aims to decode the poem’s innate symbolic space and to project it into a coherent visual realm with a surreal aesthetics of a graphic antique manuscript, abstracting away from the described events. Eventually, what we observe is a dialogue between the written unseen and the unspeakable evident. The collection consists of 304 unique pieces, one per verse line. Each piece is a 23-second video loop with sound.
