“Surrealism and Magic” is a new exhibition at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University (100 miles NW of New York City, ‘as the crow flies’). The show opens August 30th, and runs until 21st December 2014.
explores the surrealists’ interest in magic, the occult, and indigenous spirituality … Inspired by the magic-themed library of Kurt Seligmann (1900–1962), acquired by Cornell upon his death … A range of paintings and works on paper by Seligmann and his fellow surrealists will be presented, along with rare books from the fifteenth to the twentieth centuries, correspondence, ephemera, music, and film.

Having driven to Cornell University (located in lovely Ithaca, NY) several times, I must tell you that it is located more than 200 miles north west of NYC, in the stunning Finger Lakes region. It is not a trip lightly taken, as the major highways do not run through Ithaca, but swing south, and one is required to take winding, scenic and slow-traffic roads for the final approach to this collegiate city located at the rumpled end of Lake Cayuga. The gorges and waterfalls that surround and infiltrate the city are lovely; it is one of the nicest parts of NY State.
Aha, I see. Thanks for that. I was simply measuring the “as the crow flies” direct distance, via Google Maps. Looking at the rail travel, I see it’s also tricky to get to by train, as the station there was closed in the early 1960s.
