A conference paper as-mp3 by David Farnell, “Unlikely Utopians: Ecotopian Dreaming in H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Shadow over Innsmouth” and Octavia Butler’s Lilith’s Brood”, delivered at the 2010 ‘Utopia, Dystopia and Catastrophe’ conference in Australia.

All the .mp3 files of talks from this conference are online. One that caught my eye was: Geographies of Hope: The Desire for Place in Californian Science Fiction which might be of interest to those researching weird fiction in California.

The Young Man of Providence (BBC, 1983)

The Young Man of Providence is a 43-minute BBC Radio dramatised documentary on Lovecraft, dug up from Halloween 1983 and online as an mp3. It’s a mix of narrated documentary and his letters, with occasional fragments from the stories read by old-school actors and mixed with excellent FX. The best Lovecraft documentary, I’d say, although not perfect. I wonder if it might be worked up into an unofficial fan-film documentary? It could be carefully expanded into a feature-length movie by inserting new narration-free sections (contemplative Ken Burns-style pans across archival materials / evocative landscapes / old haunts / Jarman-esque dream-montages) to slacken the galloping pace that the format of a 40-minute radio programme necessarily enforced on the producers.

Impulse Media Player

Got an audio book where someone talks too fast? The excellent Impulse Media Player has just hit version 3.0. It’s freeware that gives you a crackle-free real-time speed change. It works perfectly. You can also change pitch, deepening a voice. I found settings of pitch -6 and speed -12 perfect for a more lugubrious reading of “Dreams in the Witch House”.
