A Scent over Arkham

18 Saturday Aug 2012

It had to happen. A Lovecraft perfume selection, courtest of the Black Pheonix Alchemy Lab of the eldritch town of… err… North Hollywood. Their A Picnic in Arkham page lists all their Lovecraft scents. The marketing pitch is bit off: no pictures of the bottles, and eye-achingly miniscule type for the descriptions. Possibly that’s because the bottles are, frankly, a little naff looking…

Incidentally, eBay has just banned the sale of magic spells, potions, and curses along with other psychic and prayer mumbo-jumbo. Although perfumes and scented candle schlock can still be sold. Oh, and Etsy has also banned sales of items that include “human remains or body parts”. Eww.

Living bridges

Living bridges in India…

“The root bridges, some of which are over a hundred feet long, take ten to fifteen years to become fully functional, but they’re extraordinarily strong […] some of the ancient root bridges used daily by the people of the villages around Cherrapunji may be well over 500 years old.”

Health-and-safety commissars in the West would no doubt have a fit over the idea of these in the USA or UK. But one wonders if the same techniques could be used by artists to create giant Cthulhu-esque living structures? It’d certainly go way beyond a timid weaving of willow-wands.

Neal Stephenson’s Some Remarks

Released today in print and audio book, Neal Stephenson’s collection of essays and provocations, Some Remarks: Essays and Other Writing. Nothing very Lovecraftian in it as far as I can see. But interesting defences of bookishness, musings on the social role and cultural depictions of scientists, and musings on SF/fantasy/horror genres and blurring boundaries.

Here’s a thought for a 125th birthday present for H.P. Lovecraft (20th August 2015). A new public-access library collection, containing copies of all of the print scholarship ever written about him. The purchase of these books and journals to be funded by a major Kickstarter or IndieGoGo campaign. To be open and catalogued by 2017, which is the 100th anniversary of the inception of the Mythos.

Just heard from S.T. Joshi, via his new blog post, that the World Fantasy Convention is happening in Brighton in late 2013. 31st Oct – 3rd November to be precise. For those who don’t know the British Isles, Brighton is the hip seaside playground town for London.

I missed this one, posted by Pelgrane Press for last month’s birthday celebrations…

“In celebration of the life of H.P. Lovecraft and on the anniversary of his death, we asked our Trail of Cthulhu writers and a few others if they would write us a few hundred words on how Lovecraft has influenced them.”
