The Lovecraftian Poe

Interesting news of a new Joshi-introduced book set for 2014 or 2015, The Lovecraftian Poe: Essays on influence, reception, interpretation and transformation…

“That Poe was among the greatest influences on Lovecraft is widely known; Lovecraft famously referred to Poe as both his “model” and his “God of Fiction.” Yet, despite widespread recognition of this fact amongst scholars and fans of both Poe and Lovecraft’s work, there has surprisingly so far been no collection that brings together scholarly approaches to this topic. This collection aims to address this absence, gathering original essays that focus closely on the precise nature and extent of Poe’s influence on Lovecraft, Lovecraft’s role in Poe’s wider reception and dissemination, and his adoption and adaptation of many of Poe’s concepts and techniques.”

Judging by a Google search the call-for-papers had all the reach and impact of a very small patch of slime-mould, and sadly the deadline for papers has now gone.

Move Under Ground, Lovecraftian novel for free

A Lovecraftian novel Move Under Ground (2009) has been released for free in PDF and HTML. It’s also on Amazon as a hardcover or a trade paperback or for the Kindle ereader. No audio book, sadly. Reviews were rather positive, although its 60,000 words and 210 pages were damned as “short”, by the sort of annoying reviewer who thinks a key measure of the worth of a modern novel is its thickness in inches.

Move Under Ground is reportedly a successful pastiche of Kerouac’s trademark gyrating stream-of-consciousness style, melded with Lovecraft’s approach to extended riffs on the monstrous-in-landscape. The famous Beat writer Jack Kerouac tells the story (spoilers) of the rising of R’lyeh off the coast of California, and of the road trip Jack takes as he flees from California to Manhattan to tackle the murderous Cthulhu cult. Cassady, Ginsburg, and Burroughs all have bit parts, it seems. I’ve had a 10% free sample sent to my Kindle.

On sex and poetry

A new blog post by S.T. Joshi. News that…

“Hippocampus Press has decided to publish a biannual journal devoted to weird poetry, entitled Spectral Realms [with] reviews and articles on the subject [in addition to poetry] … We hope to have the first issue ready by July [2014]”

Also news of a new scholarly book…

“Bobby Derie’s Sex and the Cthulhu Mythos, a serious and very perspicacious study of this subject. Derie, a young British critic, has analysed not only Lovecraft’s life and work for its sexual overtones and implications, but also the work of Lovecraft’s contemporaries [with publication planned for] later this year [2014] from Hippocampus Press”

The work of Lovecraft’s friend Henry S. Whitehead, back in print via a chunky paperback anthology from Wordsworth. At Wordsworth’s usual amazingly low price, which makes a nice change from seeing a $70 price tag on such things.

Of Evill Sorceries done in New-England

New blog post by S.T. Joshi. He notes of his forthcoming Variorum Lovecraft, an edition including all the textual variants in Lovecraft’s fiction, that…

“As an appendix [in Variorum Lovecraft], I will print things like … “Of Evill Sorceries done in New-England, of Daemons of No Humane Shape” — the fragment that August Derleth incorporated (with extensive alterations) into The Lurker at the Threshold (1945). It does not appear as if I or anyone else has ever published this document, in its original form.

del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Del Toro’s new book Guillermo del Toro Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions, in the New York Times…

“it also includes pictures of Bleak House, where del Toro works and stores hundreds of artworks, figurines and props. … Most disconcertingly, a lifelike full-size sculpture of H. P. Lovecraft stands in a library, angrily looking up from a book as if you’ve interrupted him”
