Lovecraft mentions seeing dog carts while in Quebec. Yes, they really were drawn by dogs…
I’ve heard that Great Danes were specifically bred to pull carts. In the hilly area, it was too awkward to use horses and larger carts. The cost of feeding a horse was also a consideration.
