DAZ and Poser Content Survey: Conan the Barbarian
I’ve recently been listening to the audio books of Robert E. Howard’s famous Conan the Barbarian stories from the 1930s.

Above: This picture is actually 3D, not painted.
If you want tasters of the stories in audio, there are a couple that are free online. Such as “The Tower of the Elephant” (and part 2) and “Rogues in the House” (and part 2).
So… I felt like doing a survey of Conan inspired content, made for Poser and DAZ Studio. Conan is of course a giant brooding Cimmerian, a barbarian from the wild uplands. He has strayed into the slightly more civilised nations of the world, but it’s not our world. Rather it’s a forgotten world placed somewhere between the sinking of Atlantis and the start of our own recorded history. So far as I know the Conan character has been out-of-copyright and in the public domain since 2006, so you are free to make comics and posters and suchlike and title them ‘Conan…’.
While there are massive amounts of warrior and hunter characters for Poser and DAZ, I’m looking here for ones that fit with how Robert E. Howard’s own words describe Conan.
Michael 4:
Michael 4 users should take a look at M4 Barbarian Warrior Bundle (needs M4 Morphs++) and the M4 Barbarian Poses. The Barbarian Outfit for M4 clothes are very Conan, and the outfit does come with DAZ presets, but the leather textures look rather plain and clean. I couldn’t find any texture upgrades or makeovers for this. The character’s face and neck is also somehow wrong, too thin and normal. Howard says he has massive thick neck muscles and a wider face.
Falcon for M4 is a character with a suitable basic hair base, which might be useful if you plan to overpaint the hair on your render later. The face is also rather good, although needs to be wider…
One for M4 is wilder, perhaps good for fight scenes. But it looks weird and rather oddly female at the top front, and so would probably need overpainting…
Raw Warrior Poses can be also applied to Michael 4. 80 poses in total…
Atlas for M4 (needs M4 Morphs++) has a face that’s nearer Conan’s width, but is too pretty and relatively unscarred for a freebooting barbarian who’s been rollocking about the taverns and battlefields for years. And the eyes are hazel rather than an icy Cimmerian blue. Atlas does however, have good skin MATs, including a battle MAT.
Deus Eris for M4 (needs M4 Morphs++) is also worth a look…
The Freak 3:
For those who prefer more impressively muscled The Freak as a base character, Warrior Lord is fairly close (requires The Freak 3). Swop out the skin, add wild straggly black hair and blue eyes. Make the oddly tiny head 25% larger, and change the face. Dirty up the axe and the leather. Then you’d be 95% of the way to a recognisable Conan.
Achilles Hair for Michael 3 will fit The Freak 3. Just turn it black…
If you want to paint on the hair afterwards, the WedgeCut Hair 2.0 for The Freak 3 might provide a useful base for painting over…
Barbarian Helmet and Sword for Poser is free. Quite old and without textures or specific character fits, but it might still be useful. R. E. Howard does have Conan in a lot of exotic Near Eastern type of nations, so the sword is actually about right for many of the stories.
But for battle scenes, pretty-boy shields won’t do much for Conan’s street cred among the Zingarian low-life. You’ll need a shield with convincing damage and blood flecks, such as Copper and Blood which has big 3000px textures. With it you also get a bonus damaged short-sword of the same quality. Those who know the excellent story “The Pool of the Black One” will remember that Conan gets through the whole adventure with a small short sword. I reckon Howard had a wager with his friend H.P. Lovecraft that he couldn’t get Conan through a whole adventure with just a small short sword/knife. 🙂
That’s it! See you in a tavern in Zamora!

Tutorial: import a Poser runtime to Carrara
A handy new 8-minute video showing how to import your whole Poser runtime into DAZ Carrara. Be warned that the tutor is only importing the small amount of free content that ships along with Poser. Not the massive 100Gb+ of runtime that many long-time Poser and DAZ users will have, which I’m guessing may take considerably longer to import. The video’s tutorial on the import process actually starts at 3:18 minutes…

Survey of new DAZ and Poser content: October 2014
Here are the new releases in DAZ Studio and Poser content, which have caught my eye this last month:
Reality 2.5 for DAZ Studio, the high-end LuxRender rendering plugin. In 32 or 64 bit format, and complete with 120 page manual…
SteamPunk: Streets is another very nice 3d scene from the new content maker Phantasmagorical Scenes…
A strong first appearance by new content creator Retrotech, with Retrotech’s The Tripod. The design looks great, although some more detailed texture makeovers for it might be welcome…
Tripods vs. butterflies? ButterflyMech, a new robot butterfly for Poser…
A new quality V4 Sci-Fi Pilot. Not the best helmet in the world, but the boots and the rest of the suit look very useable…
Bryce 7.1 Pro, Space Construction Kit turns Bryce (free at DAZ) into a Space Art engine…
A rather nice Morrowind -ish Lamplighter house…
TheAntFarm’s new Gothic City is a big space that comes with a full set of Poser and DAZ lights, and looks like an excellent setting for superhero renders…
Zen Garden is a realistic mossy Zen garden for Poser, with very close attention to details and authenticity…
AppleJack’s new AJ Forgotten Hero courtyard might make some kind of entrance to the Zen garden.
Winterland Trees is unusual, in that the trees come loaded with snow and the trees are fairly realistic. Part of the new Winterland landscape collection for DAZ…
The Barlow House Ravenskull Court and Ravenskull Stair Hall are pleasing variations on the ‘old abandoned manor house’ theme…
Poser and DAZ content users have had many gothic revival cemeteries before now, but the new Oak Hill Cemetery Bundle is a high quality bundle of matching props and is less specific in its time-period…
If H.P. Lovecraft had had a car, it might have looked like this. Phantom Ride…
Cases For Curiosities has classy modern museum display cases, frames and plinths…
That’s it!
DAZ and Poser freebies round-up
Time for a quick round-up of some recent fab freebies for DAZ Studio and Poser…
WitchyWoo House from PoserDirect…
This could work nicely with the Halloween cats for Patch I already mentioned in a previous post.
SteamPunk Goggles for Poser…
Little Vintage Camera, 1930s style…
From RuntimeDNA, toon voodoo doll Samedi 2… Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
Haunted House Poses set for M4 & V4. It looks like a lot of work went in to create these matching pose sets…
Halloween Gob Bats & Eye Bats, a makeover for the Eye Bat available at Runtime DNA…
Some ruins Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store. which might enhance a recent Stonemason ruined cities collection, or serve as a superhero battleground…
Poser Expo 3 – full weekend schedule
Poser and DAZ, new content survey for September 2014
It’s that time of the month again, so here’s my survey of the most interesting new content for DAZ Studio and Poser.
A new item from Stonemason is always welcome, and this time he’s blasted off from his ruined cities into outer-space, with a new generic Sci Fi Hangar. Although if you’ve already got GIS Terminal you have something fairly similar…
Petipet’s Sci-fi Antenna looks like a handy bit of generic sci-fi kit to have, and with the colours toned down it might be paired with Stonemason’s new hangar…
A generic sci-fi Heavy Dropship. Not especially unique, but detailed and likely to be a useful addition to the Fleet of The Glorious Runtime…
The Iskelia Facility Corridor offers a nicely minimalist sci-fi style corridor in which to have your V4 talk about discovering the gene for telepathy etc. (It requires The Iskelia Facility Courtyard).
The Corridor might be paired with the new Security Systems kit which features entry-pads, lazer trip-beams etc…
Once you have The Iskelia Facility Courtyard, bits of Zen Garden could make the Courtyard more appealing and human, without ruining the austere look…
Triton for M4 (for Poser) looks like your Zen Courtyard‘s robot gardener…
Branchdur the Tree, definitely one for those who speak Old Entish…
For faerie fans, Branchdur could be paired with the new V4 FlowerHead…
Darwin the Toon Chimp looks like a fun semi-toon character, with lots of potential for making political satires, graphics for product adverts, and suchlike…
Meanwhile, over the history corner:
Dogz has a classic English train station, The Old Railway Station…
Dryjack has some new Buffer Stops and a Plank Wagon to add a weedy old siding to the train station…
Need a more exotic railway? Jack Tomalin has a sumptious new Orient Express dining car, in Dine on the Orient…
By the Seaside Beach Huts are perfect English seaside / pier huts. These might work well as replacement structures for the older Disconsolation seaside pier…
Need a really ugly old modernist-style 1960s era school? School’s Out is just the place…
Phantasmagorical Scenes makes a nice debut with a complex steampunk hall / boiler room, SteamPunk – Vents.
Finally, an old rowboat is handy to have in your runtime, and the Old Rowboat also comes in a broken-down version…
Poser Expo 3 – tickets now on sale
Poser Expo 3, the online conference, now has the event registration open. Eight live webinars, with experienced content developers and Eric VanDycke of the Runtime DNA store, and the opportunity to interact and ask questions. Ir runs 18th-19th October 2014.
New DAZ and Poser content round-up: August 2014
It’s time for another survey of the last month’s 3D content, released for DAZ Studio and Poser. Surprisingly rich pickings this month, considering it was August and most folks were on holiday. I found a moderate amount of nice sci-fi, once I started digging. Plus a wide range of other quality and unusual items.
A new Stonemason sci-fi environment is always welcome. His new Sci Fi Crew Quarters looks like a great addition to his recent sci-fi interiors range. ..
AppleJack’s new AJ Airport is nicely futuristic, and could also double as a near-future spaceport of the Virgin Galactic type…
Sentinel Explorer 225 could be the first arrival at your new spaceport…
The Q88 Martian Explorer is another nice new sci-fi vehicle, with more than a touch of Syd Mead, and with a bit of Mead-like colour would look awesome with your new spaceport in the background….
Usefully generic is SciFi Blast Bunker. With a little tweaking and Photoshop work you could probably make it anything from far-future sci-fi through to a Second World War bunker, or even an underwater mini-submarine pen entrance.
The Cyber Drone is a nicely detailed generic sci-fi attack-drone…
Oskarsson has some very weak promo pictures for his new NecroGothica HD, but it’s an interesting looking Aliens-style large environment. There have been similar alien hive environments in the past but apparently this one “displays up to 4 million polygons on your computer but the HD Morph only becomes visible when you render”…
NecroGothica could perhaps be combined with Coflek-Gnorg’s new Klingon-ish Battle Council chamber.
Hivewire has a variety of new releases of its popular Hivewire Horse, enabling various new breeds…
Need a home for your Horse Lords? The well-known designer DM has a new Essence of Fantasy scene, obviously inspired by Rohan in the Lord of the Rings (although the central butterfly motif looks more Assyrian)…
Feeling a bit more Elvish? Take a seat on the new Throne Of Summer…
Got a few Rock Trolls? The new Ridge Walk Mountains would be a very cool place for your fantasy warrior to encounter them…
Kendra for Genesis 1 looks like a useful generic character to have in your runtime…
Ironman13 gives us a slightly retro 1990s style i13 Working and some handy i13 Working Office poses keyed to it…
The Studio, for which it would be nice to see a modern home-office makeover and preset. The distant view for The Studio might be a slightly Photoshopped Summer TreeHouse Cottage.
Faveral’s Explorer’s Den looks like a fabulous piece of work. We’ve seen a handful of retro explorer / detective rooms like this before, but this one looks like it beats them all. Useful for historic role-playing gamers needing prompt cards for players, especially those in the Call of Cthulhu and Gumshoe line. Cluedo-style “the butler did it!” murder-mystery scenes also spring to mind…
Your Explorer’s Den explorer probably drives a Retro Dream V16 Special… Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
With the First World War commemoration around the corner, London224 has a new authentic MS14 RAF FE bi-plane…
Koggen has a nicely made merchant ship from the era of Marco Polo, only in .obj format…
And once your Marco Polo sailor has safely reached China, he may find some hungry pandas that need feeding 🙂 Bamboo Megapack looks usefully flexible since it could also be handy for a range of other uses: jungle warfare, kung-fu, exotic fantasy gardens, steampunk hothouses, even biospheres on spaceships.
Halloween is coming, and the new Immortalis may be useful for that…
Lastly, Vue users aren’t forgotten. New are Curious Stacked Shack for Vue and the Halloween-ish Curious Shaker Row Houses for Vue…
That’s it! See you next month.
