Survey: Unusual K4
Here’s a quick survey of the unusual and quality fantasy makeovers for the original DAZ Kids 4 (aka K4). Being the same generation, they should also be able to take your older V4/M4 poses and expressions.
The Forestals, now at Renderosity. Hair not included.
K4 Alien Force Characters (no longer sold – update, available free here) and their free spacesuit base (still available).
K4 Elf henchmen and a leader-character Yodkin.
There was also Grimlens, a more fishy looking K4 gremlin.
O Sole Mio is a steampunk urchin K4 outfit. Note that this does NOT include the full-body toon morphs, including good toony hands and feet, which are shown in the store previews. The required pack to do these body shapes was the Morphlet K4 morphs from Capsces, which appear to be no longer available.
Nordic Trolls (dress and hat only).
Kids 4: CrossDresser License for converting clothes to K4.
K4 will also take .BVH files for V4/M4, of which there are thousands free.
Will also take the V4/M4 Creature Creator morph injections, and the M4 Faces of Fantasy head morphs (Orc, Nosferatu, Villain etc).
K4’s default INJ morphs (standard and ++) appear to be confusing, in that they are apparently not like those of M4 and V4. Those give you gazillions of morphs. The K4 bundles only give you five additional ‘body shape’ morphs, but the expected lots of default and ++ head morphs load fine. However, I find that even when some body dials do load, they do absolutely nothing (e.g. foot size). I gave up on getting such useful body morphs to load, such as ‘foot size’. But thankfully, the Creature Creator and Faces of Fantasy morphs don’t appear to need the default morphs at all. Faces of Fantasy also has one very useful ‘chunky gnome’ type full-body morph, which you see in action in the picture above.
Known to work without Morphs ++:
After some error messages I had success in loading Berserker for M4 and got head-dials for Old, Monstrous Head and Ogre.
Amducias M4 (horse head) and Rana (frog head / hands feet) works. Most likely other packs from this maker will also work (see Lepus rabbit Web link, above).
G Insectoid Morph works, as does its MAT. It works so well I suspect it was designed for K4.
The M4 Forestals Head INJ works, and gets you a characterful old man face. Could be good for making a garden gnome.
Sparky’s Moulder M4 works fine, except for one bit of texture mis-fit on the front. You could probably cover this by cloning the texture, or by adding a bandage.
BAT’s The Gobblers works fine, at least for the mediocre heads. Not the bodies. Don’t stress if you can’t find it, it doesn’t look all that great.
Trekkieggrrl’s M4 Claws Injection works fine.
Certain V4 items, such as “V4 conforming fingernails” (long / sharp nails) will also prove useful for K4 kit-bashing.
I assume Character Randomizer for K4 will work on all these, though it may be assuming its dealing with a default K4 + Kids 4 Morphs++.
Redeye Cat freebie .ZIPs
Redeye Cat retired in May and on her blog kindly gave permission to freely redistribute the .ZIP files and documentation for her freebies. The .ZIP file links on her blog have now gone at September 2021, and the Archive.org’s Wayback service did not catch them.
As a result, there is now a 500Mb mega-bundle archive on Archive.org. This is mostly of interest for Poser storybook and steampunk people, but also has some items of DAZ use such as the V4/M4 sci-fi poses. Those who still value Genesis 1 for its dynamic flexibility and Poser-import will also especially value the freebies here.

DAZ Studio 4.15.0.30
After being totally bjorked for a while by an unexpected Mac OS upgrade, today sees the official news of the release of the DAZ Studio Update for Big Sur…
The Daz Studio team is pleased to announce […] Mac compatibility to include macOS Big Sur and all previously supported Mac operating systems. The new [v 4.15.0.30] includes a handful of bug fixes and scripting updates for both Mac and Windows operating systems in anticipation of the future Daz Studio 5 upgrade.
No mention of scripts and plugins breaking, for 4.15.0.30 on a Mac. There’s also a new Windows version for 4.15.0.30. Well done to the devs and managers, who must have worked very hard on the Mac fix. Hopefully Apple will give DAZ a bit of warning before their next Mac OS update.
Two art tools for DAZ – on sale
Currently on a 50% sale at DAZ, two of the illustration-making tools that are worth having. There’s no guarantee that utilities like this will go to 70%+ on Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
Keep in mind that some of the folders for Lineart9000 need to be installed under your C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\.. and you can’t just idly plonk it all into your main content runtime and expect it to work.
The next issue of VisNews (September 2021) will have a four-page survey/test of such DAZ tools, and these two are picked out as two of the most useful / easiest to use. That said, the Lineart9000 3Delight line render is a bit CAD-like, and conversely the somewhat blobbly base linework from Sketchy is not likely to please a regular comics reader or an editor at a children’s book publishing house. Sketchy actually shows up in DAZ as Shader Presets | DimensionTheory | iRayToon Shader, if you need to check if you already have it or not.
With both you could perhaps make some interesting Photoshop composites from the same scene, layering and blending multiple renders from each utility.
New for DAZ and Poser in August 2021
Right, nearly the end of the month… and thus time for another survey of interesting new items for Poser and DAZ Studio. I may have missed one or two, as I could only get so far back on the DAZ Store, as usual.
Science fiction:
Not much original sci-fi this month, but there’s a nice pack with sci-fi alternatives to the usual stock Primitives, FM Glowing Things. Also useful for Synthwave scenes and suchlike.
Robot X95A, a late 1940s sci-fi pulp robot.
A free Sonic Screwdriver for DAZ Carrara, from the British TV series Doctor Who. I don’t recall what era this is from. There’s also a Tennant-era DrTen Sonic Screwdriver Prop for Poser. Obviously these are fan-art so can’t be used commercially.
Also from Doctor Who, an Alpha Centaurian for Poser. It looks a bit stagey because the original was a man-in-a-suit costume on a 1970s TV show.
On ArtStation the free and nicely-made Small work 1 comms tower, which can be easily exported from Blender to .OBJ or .FBX format. See the ‘Scripts’ section at the end of this post for a new free Blender-to-Poser automated script.

DAZ Studio has new Enterprise Licensing plans for studios creating major productions with the help of DAZ Studio and “large scale” use of the software’s various plugins and content. So far as I can see this changes nothing in the current and long-standing royalty-free arrangement. It just provides “world-class” support to studios using DAZ assets, in a busy work setting where time-is-money. The first such client enjoying the service is Canada’s…
Wind Sun Sky Entertainment [which] has seen exceptional success this year including their […] hit Amazon Prime Original series Invincible.
Invincible has been such a hit, that in May 2021 Amazon renewed the show for another two seasons. Nice to be able to show it to the pros who disdain DAZ and Poser and say… “yup, that’s made with DAZ that is…”.
A recent job ad for a new series suggest their key tools are DAZ Studio and Adobe After Effects.
Simple retarget for Blender
There’s a new free motion-capture Python script for Blender. It uses Blender to… “re-target motion-capture data from Mixamo, BVH or iClone to Rigify, DAZ or custom rigs”.
Another look at the DAZ changelog and iRay
I had a quick look at the Softpedia changelog digest for DAZ Studio. My last look was at the January 2021 version, which had then added iRay 2020.1.3.
I had overlooked a March 2021 DAZ Studio release which saw an…
“Update to NVIDIA Iray 2020.1.5 (334300.8936)”
But the June 2021 release appears to have dropped back two versions…
“Integrated Iray 2020.1.3 (334300.6349)”
So what was briefly in 2020.1.4 / 2020.1.5 iRay? Not a lot for either. Bugfixes and new updates for some under-the-hood internal libraries. So we’re not missing much, by the look of it, by dropping back from 1.5 to 1.3. The current DAZ Studio beta is 18th August, but judging by the forums that’s cutting-edge early-adopter seat-of-the-pants stuff.
However, I see that the iRay devs currently have iRay up at 2021.0.1, and it has rather more exciting goodies. Their key focus has been to add much faster volumetrics and caustics and better light-spill.
Also…
“dramatically decreased host/CPU texture memory usage”
“Dramatically” sounds good. When this reaches DAZ it sounds like it could further speed up a real-time CPU-driven viewport. Nice.
They also have an improved Interactive version of iRay, although that sounds like it needs an expensive RTX card…
The CPU memory improvement means that when DAZ plugs in iRay 2021.0.1, that could well be a good reason for me to jump to the then-latest version. I currently run iRay on CPUs alone, and can do so in a large viewport in near real-time.
Bypassing the scroll-bars problem in Poser and DAZ: with Pointix Scroll++ 2.02
Call me ‘delicate’, but I’m not so keen on painful swollen fingers and hurty-squinty eyes. Thus I went in search of a way to bypass the thin dark scrollbars in Poser 11 and DAZ Studio. Of course you can always ignore them and click into a panel/window to get ‘focus’ on it, then scroll and scroll again using a central mouse wheel and big twisty finger-movements. That’s not ideal, and such clunkiness is compounded by mouse-wheels that tend to become gunked up and anything but free-wheeling.
But imagine you could just hover your mouse over a Library window pane in either DAZ or Poser, auto-focusing the mouse into that window. Then with a single ‘right-click and hold’ (anywhere) start elegantly scrolling the window’s contents down or up. With the scrolling all then under the control of very subtle mouse movements. No need to shift focus to a different Library pane, by first clicking inside it. No need to then scrollwheel and scrollwheel again and again to get down a long list.
There’s a surprising lack of Windows helper software to do this. Some of the functionality is built into modern mice, but while they sort-of work well on browsers they can’t do what I describe above. Nor can they distinguish between different Library panels in DAZ and Poser. Is there software that can? Well, Google Code has kept the old abandonware MoScroll_0_7 beta around, but I found it very basic and so far as I can tell no longer does anything at all after install.
The best option that can is the equally old Windows abandonware called Pointix Scroll++ 2.02. Basically its unique function can be summed up as “right-click anywhere to smoothly scroll, under the control of subtle mouse-movements”, and it can handle focusing into subtly-different Library panels with ease. This software has now turned up at at WinFiles Mouse and Keyboard Utilities. There is also a slightly different copy of 2.02 on Archive.org in an old cover-disc bundle of freebies and shareware titled ‘(Czech) PC World 1999-06 CD-ROM.’ Yes, it’s that old. But… like many old bits of Windows shareware it still works fine!
After getting it (ideally from WinFiles, which is what worked for me) you then visit Carlton Bale’s page “How to Scroll if Your Mouse has No Scroll Wheel”. There he has the Netplaque and zeroes you need to enable this old abandonware. He also offers some useful settings screenshots. Tested and working for me on the WinFiles download of v.2.02. He also hosts an archive of the slightly more advanced 2.05 version, but so far as I can tell neither his Netplaque or regfix work on that.
So… 2.02 is still working fine, is stable and doing a lovely job (though I can’t vouch for it on Windows 10). Version 2.02 may thus be enough for you, especially if you need scrolling on a scroller-free device. It works very nicely with auto-focusing on and scrolling the Poser and DAZ UIs, and does the same with the PzDB 1.3 external content library manager. Very useful when scrolling past 463 similar MAT files. It’s also said to be especially unique and handy for handling scrolling and zooming on large 3D CAD files, which may also interest some readers. A commenter on the Carlton Bale page linked above said…
in CAD its function is to zoom in and out wherever you place the cursor. This is currently done with the wheel in jumps, as you can zoom only to the extent the finger can turn the wheel. And the wheel gets ruined very often. It’s a delight to just press the button and get to the required zoom at fantastic speed.
Which kind of suggests it may also be of use for things like Google Earth, though I’ve not tested it with that. I know it also works nicely with Trello, as it can also scroll sideways. A normal mouse will only scroll up and down on a Trello column. The original market was business people with big spreadsheets to navigate, hence it had to go sideways as well as up/down.
Back in Poser 11 it does not affect or work on the Poser dials, which is good, though it will scroll down a big list of morphs like any other long UI panel. It will not scroll up and down a long list of render presets in Poser, regrettably. Nor will its side-scroll work with the Poser 11 side-scrolling Material Room.
You can still make a static right-click and get the usual Windows context-menu.
Now my main problem was that it uses the right-click button, a problem possibly unique to me. Because using Scroll++ meant my trusty old StrokesPlus mouse-gestures software was bjorked, and StrokesPlus is vital for things like Back / Forward in a Web browser and in Explorer. Eek! Could StrokesPlus perhaps emulate the unique Scroll++, I wondered? Well, while it can assign things like a clunky PageUp key as acSendKeys(“{PGUP}”), its ‘local’ scrolling commands all now fail to work (not because of Scroll++, I might add). So no, StrokesPlus is not going to do what Scroll++ can do.
The most obvious solution, for me, was to…
– run StokesPlus set to a right-click.
– run Scroll++ set to a middle-click.
… and thus they don’t conflict and fight over the right-click. It’s easy to swop them over, if that proves more convenient for long periods of either 3D or Web work.
But this meant that my trusty five-year old and somewhat gunked Microsoft mouse was no longer up to the job of the middle-click. Even a cleaning and a generous squirt of WD40 would not fix it. Thus a new mouse was needed… with a highly sensitive middle-click (unlike the old one). Thankfully I had picked one up in a sale a while back, and it had been stashed in a drawer ‘waiting for the day’. It’s HP’s perfect wired clone of my previous and also perfect wired Microsoft mouse. I presume they’ve licensed this very affordable re-brand of Microsoft’s usually very expensive mouse. Get them while they’re hot.
So there, for those who need it, is the obvious additional solution to running StokesPlus (old LuaScript version) and Scroll++ 2.02 in tandem. A new mouse. The middle-click button is now a pressing-only button, although can also finesse the scroll with a slight nudge, and is thus less likely to become gunked up too quickly.

It’s that time of the month again. What new items did I notice for DAZ Studio and Poser, in July 2021? Mostly DAZ and Poser, though this month there’s also a few Vue, Carrara and Blender items.
The DAZ Store is still giving problems even when paginated and with only the one tab open — ‘out-of-memory’ crashes on a workstation with masses of RAM. No other site acts like this. There came a point where I had to give up on browsing back through the store, so a few items may have missed consideration this month. Maybe the problem is the Opera browser, but it shouldn’t be as that runs on a standard Chrome base.

Setting “Items Per Page” to 60 (rather than All) brings back the old paginated or ‘per page’ browsing. It’s still a bit sticky, even now, but is much more workable.

How to have PzDB shut down quickly
A useful tip for shutting down PzDB quickly. PzDB is the popular third-party Poser Library database-and-search software.
1. Index your small Poser 11 runtime at C:\Users\Public\Documents\Poser 11 Content\Runtime
(Assuming it is small, it is for me. You might also use your Vue library as an equally small proxy)
2. Always switch back to this one library and disable the others (main DAZ, main Poser runtime, Vue etc) before shutdown of PzDB. Do a ‘blank’ search that brings its contents to view.
3. PzDB will now shut down far more quickly than when exiting with one or more mega-runtimes loaded.
I suspect the ‘long shutdown’ problem is with the MS Access which PzDB runs on, rather than PzDB itself. Anyway, this is a workaround that works for those with 20-year runtimes.
What’s new for DAZ and Poser – May 2021
It’s the end of the month again, time for another personal survey of new DAZ and Poser goodies.

Android X02 for G8M AddOn which adds a cape and cowl to Android X02 for G8M. Also discounted at the CGbytes Store. Here we see it matte, without the shiny chrome plating.
Equally retro is Vintage SciFi Spacesuit for G8F. Nicely done, and it does look like something you might have seen on the cover of Marvel Tales in the 1930s.
Liquidator Mask for Genesis 8. I assume it’s not ‘near fan-art’, but I guess it could be similar to something in a current TV series?
Steampunk:
Very little this month, but what there is is handsome. The first Russian submarine. No format specified, but I assume .OBJ?
Fantasy:
MortemVetus brings his classic Graycrest for Michael 4 back to the market. Was at RuntimeDNA, so veteran 3D-ers may already have him in the runtime.
When Greycrest is around you’ll be needing the new Conquerors Delight – Burnt to the Ground Hovel from Cybertenko.
Greycrest may also want to stride along Sixus1’s Viking Shores Scene and Props, currently just $7.50 at DAZ.
Cybertenko’s Wolf Skin for Poser and M4. It does not appear to come with a preset for Poser dynamic hair, but someone will surely make such a furry freebie for it. See also Cybertenko’s recent Mari Lwyd head-dress.
