Poser 13.3.864 is released (October 2023). I’m impressed by how much they’ve fixed and added since 13.0. And it’s currently just $99 for Poser 13, if you have a licence for any previous version. Which suggests that Poser 14 may be around the corner.

How to Restore Drag and Drop from the Poser and DAZ library software ‘PzDB’, if you’d lost it through Windows upgrades which affected MS Office 2007’s mso.dll.

DAZ Studio Premiere – a new subscription version.

Poser 13.3.864, but 11 vanishes…

Poser is newly at Poser 13.3.864 as of 16th October 2024. Includes a September release which…

“Fixed issue where number of cores used for CPU renders was limited to 4”.

Ouch. Yes, rather useful for those with 12 or more! Check the big list of previous fixes, since it may be you still have an older version of 13 and thus are missing out on a huge amount of polish and hard-work by the dev team. Also fixed is a “memory leak” for SuperFly renders of more than 2048px.

Note also that Poser 11 has now regrettably vanished from the “Downloads Purchased” option on the official downloads page. Which seems a pity for late-comers, since 11 can happily co-exist with later versions, and a Poser 11 runtime is looked for by E-on Vue when you integrate the two softwares. Vue is now free, and I assume E-on didn’t remove the Poser SDK from their final release — but I can’t download the newly free Vue to check if 11 is still looked for / required. Since there’s region-blocking on the download and no .torrent for it.

Vue 2024 free is blocked in the UK

I finally found out what the problem is with the Vue 2024 download, at last. Someone is doing region-blocking. I’m in the UK, which means the download never starts. The download also fails on a completely different PC, also in the UK.

British users of Vue are being actively blocked, is the only conclusion. Either it’s E-on doing this, or there’s a slim chance that my ISP has the video file-hoster Limelight.com on some blacklist? E-on is using Limelight.com to host the Vue 2024 installer .zip files.

I discovered the region-blocking because if I switch to a U.S. VPN, and thus have my browser pretend to be in the USA, the 1.9Gb Vue 2024 download starts immediately. Sadly the VPN is a free one, and won’t stay active for the length of such a huge download.

There are no .torrents, which would have been the sensible thing to offer for such large .zip files.

AI:

Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL): ControlNets for SDXL models. Still not great, but apparently better than previous attempts.

InvokeAI: How to Get Regional Control In Images using layers and a few other items.

Camera-control example: Place angled camera view, seen from (slightly above:1.9), at or very near the start of your prompt. Vary as needed. Adding the opposite – e.g. seen from below – in the negative prompt can also help. Better with some models than with others.

It seems the perma-offer of a Poser 12 licence for around $50 has vanished, presumably ahead of the planned Poser 14 release. The bargain licences had been sold via Graphixly, the Clip Studio Paint store. I guess we may see Poser 13 on a similar perma-offer once v14 is out, but that’s just a guess.

E-on releases Vue 2024 for free, full version

E-on has kindly released Vue 2024 “for free, including for commercial use”, perpetual and un-crippled, after owner Bentley Systems “decided to cease development” rather than sell it on. The final version improved clouds, improved viewport display, and added Blender’s Cycles as an experimental render option.

Apparently the free 2024 edition has all the subscription Vue’s superb export capabilities to C4D, Maya etc. And since its SDK still supports easy Poser import, it effectively replaces the old PoserFusion export from Poser. Export is done via a new Export Central panel in Vue 2024.

Python is supported, so theoretically a script could be devised to link Vue to AI image generation, taking quick rough-render Vue landscapes and depth-passes and sending them to AI for full amazi-fication.

Downloads are at https://www.bentley.com/software/e-on-software-downloads/ though the download links are currently 404. Presumably overloaded.

New users should keep in mind that Vue uses CPU rendering, and your monster graphics-card (GPU) will only be of use in accelerating the viewport.

Poser 13 wishlist, and more

On YouTube, an hour-long My Poser 13 wishlist. Well-informed and worth a listen. However, the presenter seems to be missing a trick on some existing P12 Poser scripts and the easy Vue integration…

* Depth-of-field: He seems unaware that there’s a free Poser 12 script for calculating DOF.

* Scatter: Again, there’s a free Poser 12 script for that too, if you don’t wan’t to pay for the paid scatter/array solution in Poser 12.

* Atmospherics: Easy Universal Glow for Poser 11 and Poser 12, with light ‘spillover’. With Photoshop Action and full PDF manual. Again, free.

Otherwise, it’s trivial to take a Poser scene to Vue… and then you have all the luscious foggy/misty atmospherics you can imagine.

* Easy Billboarding: Easy setup with always-faces-the-camera functionality. Not free in this case, but see the Python script billboarding-plane-always-faces-camera.py in the sets of pre-made sample scripts that come with PhilC’s Python for Poser Tutorials on Renderosity. Still working in Poser 12, no conversion needed for Python 3. Admittedly, it’s in an expensive $30 bundle that hardly every gets a discount. I was lucky enough to get it when it was down at around $12, a couple of years back. Very useful, especially if you need to hack or bodge or tweak Python scripts.

* Vue: Some of the rendering-quality needs expressed in the video, re: Firefly to SuperFly automation, might be solved by a step sideways. Simply import the Poser 12 scene to Vue and render there, for a very quick and easy way to get a more photoreal quality while still using older Firefly textures.

To his list I’d add a few of my own long-wanted features:

1) A better way to build and load a library of custom Sketch presets. Although admittedly, since Sketch is render-size dependent (what looks pleasing at 1800px may not at 3600px), it would probably be better done from having a set of presets located in the Library. How about a feature that optionally saves a custom preset from the Sketch Designer to the Library, nicely bundled up as an iconized script that sets the preset’s required render-size and then loads the preset and runs the render?

2) A built-in Scene Toy replacement.

3) Renderosity buys PzDB outright, and gives it away free. Having a discreet banner-ad in that would alone make it worth the cost, surely?

Release: Vue 2023

E-on has released their landscape software Vue in the 2023 version. This offers “feature parity between Creator and Professional” and unlimited render-size for Creator. Creator is now “personal non-commercial use only”, but that really shouldn’t affect most hobbyists and students.

Vue still has easy automatic Poser integration / import, on which see the recent test in Digital Art Live magazine #71…

Which means this new unified 2023 version now offers an easy Poser export route to…

Cinema4D R20 to 2023

Creator 2023 users now have access to these export options, since they are no longer locked away in the more costly version of Vue.

Terragen 4.6 – a big update

According to the Newsletter, Terragen 4.6 is about to be released. This being the first big update for the advanced 3D landscape desktop software in two years.

* Windows now has .VBD export (was previously Linux only).

* Export clouds in .VBD for use in Blender etc.

* Better sRGB support.

* Better .FBX import, better .FBX export compatibility with Unreal Engine.

* Now with import and export of population caches as XML, as well as binary.

* Rendering speed improvements, faster Preview renders.

* Pro users get an experimental pipeline for RPC integration with other third-party tools.

* An open-source RPC Python module, so you can write Python scripts enabling other software to ‘talk’ to Terragen.

* Geolocation (aka “Georeferencing”) is said to become free in the Terragen 4.6 Free (aka Learning Edition, Non-Commercial). So far as I can tell, this is about aligning tiles side by side, rather than grabbing a DEM landscape tile from a user-friendly Google Earth style world-browser.

Still supports Windows 7+, and the update is free. Terragen 4 Free is free, and then currently Terragen 5 Creative is $299, the Pro is $599. A Mac version is coming soon, and a fun nodes-free ‘sky making’ Terragen Sky tool is also coming in December 2022.

Changes for Vue creator edition

Changes for the Vue landscape software.

The more affordable ‘Creator’ Vue now gets many of the Pro and Enterprise features. Cinema 4D and Maya integrations will be the addition that most will be interested in, since that will offer an easy Poser -> Vue -> C4D / Maya export workflow. Also added to Creator are “unlimited render size”, Python scripts, Multipass and G-buffer renders, among others. Nice. See the link for full details.

However, there’s a kicker… ‘Creator’ Vue will now be for “Personal non-commercial use only”. But that shouldn’t affect most hobbyists and students. At the most, it would affect those who pick up a few prints-sales each year from DeviantArt or ArtStation.

And… “starting today, any VUE and PlantFactory legacy licenses (versions 2016 and below) re-activation request will be contingent to a service order.” In other words it seems you’ll pay a small unspecified ‘servicing fee’ to have E-On re-activate an ancient Vue licence. Seems fair enough, as long as it’s a fair price. I believe you can also ask them to restore your old Cornucopia content purchases.

Vue’s magic “w”

Problem: In E-on’s Vue, the Camera Zoom / Pan controls and Nudge are way too sensitive for Poser scene imports to Vue. The settings there appear to be intended for vast three-mile wide scenes, where exact artistic framing of the picture is not so important.

Former solution: Pressing down Crtl while moving the camera used to work to damp down the camera, but now no longer does. The old manual had: “You can slow down the camera controls by holding down the Ctrl key as you move (this can be customized using the Operations tab of the Options panel).” This was good for Vue 11, Vue 2016, and still is if you have them. Not for the latest version(s).

New solution: The answer is “w” for the new versions of Vue. It is the new keyboard modifier for slowing or ‘damping’ the camera. Who knew? Not E-on’s Learning Center, certainly. No results for a search there for ‘Camera Controls’ and similar.

Customised as before with: Top menu | open Options panel | switch to Operations tab | scroll down the long list to find ‘Trigger Modifiers’.

There doesn’t seem much to be done about Nudge, though I guess a Python script could “move currently selected item down by X units” in a far smaller increment. I expect my nudge to be like Photoshop, one pixel at a time. Not 50 feet at a time.

Vue users could also use a Python script that runs through all possible settings that could have the damnable ‘Lens Flare’ enabled, and turns it off. Ideally permanently. It still takes forever to run at the end of a completed render, if enabled. You may think you’ve turned it off, but always seems to find a way to sneak back in. As Vue renders are now so fast, this is a big drag.

Poser to Vue

A 10-step Poser to Vue guide in 2022. Yes, it still works.

1. Install Poser 11. If possible, tell its Library about your Poser 12 runtime, if you also have Poser 12.

2. In Poser, make a scene with Poser.

3. Save the scene as a normal .PZ3 Poser scene file.

4. Install Vue (Vue 2016 R5, or latest subscription Vue R6, or both).

5. In the Vue “Options”, find the Poser button and set the path to the Poser 11 .EXE file’s folder. The Poser SDK version will be automatically set.

6. In Vue, New Scene, File, “Import Object…” (NOT “Import entire scene…”). Find and load Poser .PZ3 file.

7. On the import options pop-up: Group figures as single meshes. Render using Poser Shader Tree. Single Frame at “0”. (Research the other import options, as needed).

8. Ignore Vue’s legacy warning notice about your puny under-powered PC — it appears to say the same thing regardless of if your PC is a 1876 steam-driven abacus or a modern workstation with oodles of RAM and many cores. Just say “No” to having Vue over-ride your Poser scene import options with settings that it thinks are best.

9. Vue imports the Poser scene. Should not take too long. There’s a Progress Bar.

10. Frame the Poser scene nicely (Vue does not import Poser cameras), apply a Vue Atmosphere, Vue plants etc. Save file. Render.

There should be no materials tweaking required. Vue knows about Poser textures. The only thing you have to watch out for is spectacular on the lights and the sun in Vue.

Crtl is the camera movement damper key for Vue 11, Vue 2016, and W is the damper for the current versions. With this key pressed down on the keyboard, the camera moves in far small increments, more suitable for artistic framing of a Poser scene that’s smaller than the vast landscapes Vue is mainly used for.
