Miyre have a new free standalone toon character, Mrs. Chunk. Includes clothing and hair, and works with Poser and DAZ.

A sweet little video demo, new from Nerd 3D, made with DAZ Studio…
Tired of all those buff young twinkle-toes and body-builders? Need some mature characters for your runtime and your art?
Welcome to my survey of the best of the older and elderly people available for Poser, DAZ, and DAZ Carrara.
I’ve deliberately chosen the simpler characters and packs, ones that have don’t have ridiculous levels of dependencies. I’ve also left out various hair and beard packs, since I think it’s often better and quicker to paint hair on after a render, using Photoshop or Painter.
Let’s go through the various key base characters for DAZ Studio or Poser…
Micheal 4 (M4):
August for M4 is perfect for your senior Ancient Roman senator or modern businessman…

The free Frank for M4 is also quite distinguished but in a more flinty way, and he comes with facial expressions. But note that he requires the Michael 4 ++ morphs set…

Also worth a look, and also requiring the Michael 4++ morphs, is this more soulful one who could make an excellent learned scribe or monk…

Gramps for Troy for M4 might be useful if you need an ageing astronaut or an armed services veteran…

There’s also a baldness pack for M4 which could be useful. See also the free Balding for M4 and M3.
Micheal 3 (M3):
Charles is a characterful older man for Micheal 3, made from photo textures…

Ralph for M3 has a rounder face…

Need an old biker or a dubious religious guru? Senile Santa 2 should fit such a casting call…

There was also an M3 “aging skin” kit, the Adrian Overlay Texture Kit Vol 3.
Victoria 4:
Dragonstorm’s 1-Click V4 Age Injector for Poser works with Victoria 4, Victoria 4 Elite, Aiko 4, The Girl 4, or Stephanie 4. This gives you morphs, saggy effects on skin, and elderly skin textures. There’s also a DAZ version…

This Injector kit allows you to “age” any Victoria 4 -based character, and without requiring the Victoria 4++ morphs.
One of the most notable elderly women characters, who do require the Victoria 4++ morphs to work, is Mrs Senile Santa…

Another nice characterful choice, for a female ancient warrior woman or starship commander, might be V4 Horizon…

Victoria 3:
Phyllis for V3 is perfect for the homely farmer’s wife…

While Rose for V3 could fit the role of the wise old Queen…

For older black women there is Golden Years V3… Was at RuntimeDNA, now appears to be lost.

Miki 3:
Miki 3 users have Moira for Miki 3…

Miki 2:
Miki 2 users have Elder Grandmother: Huian and the similar Elder Grandmother: Weici…

DAZ Genesis:
There’s a full set of Genesis age morphs…

The old Poser G2 series:
G2 Jessi & G2 James came with the old Poser 6. G2 Koji was a purchasable extra. They can still be useful as background characters that won’t put too much stress on your PC when in a scene…
Koji has Toghrul, an older Mongolian style character…

G2 Jessi has Martha for G2 Jessi…

And those needing a witch or beggar-woman might look at Granny Goatflax for Jessi G2…

Toon and stylised (Micheal 4):
Grandpa for M4 could be quite useful for those needing a comic character, perhaps for over-painting. He does need the Michael 4 Morphs++ and also the Morphus add-on, though. Still works without Morphus, but the head is not quite so toony. He also has extra photoreal textures.

Toon and stylised (all these are standalone characters):
The main stylised older male character is Nursoda’s excellent Doctor Pitterbill. He now has quite a good range of accessories, props, and clothing. My other iClone blog had a full survey of Pitterbill stuff earlier in 2012. Although unfortunately Nursoda’s website (with all its freebies) has been down now for about six weeks. Here’s Pitterbill…

Other stylised older people who are standalone characters include one by the toon specialists 3D Universe, which has a nice standalone Gramps character, along with some basic clothing for him.

There is also a good stylised standalone character that comes with a steampunk-era clothing set…

Female toon characters are notably less well served with character-aging kits. But there is Mature Mavka which is for Nursoda’s standalone Mavka character…

That’s it. Don’t forget to keep taking the old age rejuvenation pills! 🙂
Added to the sidebar Directory, on this blog: Stock 3D. Stock 3D which sells Poser World models individually, rather than via the $25 “all you can download” membership system that the Poser World website operates. A nice easy way to ‘top up’ with that latest ‘must-have’ model, even if your Poser World membership has expired.
Interesting new item at Renderosity from a new vendor, Fluffy Cat for Poser, for $25. Requires Poser, Millenium Cat, Classic Cats textures for MilCat, and RTEJava (for which Fluffy Cat’s readme has full instructions). The pictures are certainly nice, but the description is a bit vague and very minimal…
“Produces a lovely, fluffy and dynamic fur on the Millennium Cat […] made in the Poser hair room.”

Update: Now at Hivewire. The Java appears to be a utility needed to check if you have MilCat in your runtime, and if so then it unpacks matched hair-base geometries?
A new issue of 3D Art Direct magazine, the free magazine with a focus on 3D sci-fi art made with hobbyist software…

Desperately in need of a better typeface, but otherwise a very good magazine.
A new 3D Universe toon character for DAZ Studio or Poser is always a treat, and the new Toon Crab is no exception. Available now, on the DAZ Store…

Can you inject dynamism and “life” into a DAZ Studio or Poser character pose, as easily as you can inject a morph? Only if you know the secrets of the pros. Commercial comics artists know more than most about this topic, and American comic-book artist Brian Haberlin (Spawn) has a handy and quality new article on the top 10 ways to bring your 3D character art to life.

Brian also has a cool long article on overpainting 3D renders for comics, using Painter… which comes from the book Secrets of Corel Painter Experts: Tips, Techniques, and Insights for Users of All Abilities…

Survey of 3D dogs for DAZ Studio or Poser, realistic and toon:
The “DAZ Millennium Dog” is free on the DAZ Store, in the form of a MillDog LE (light) version that has 43 basic morphs. This DAZ MilDog sent the old Poser 4 dog to the retirement kennels. Renderosity has a pack of 25 poses that specifically work with the LE version of the Millennium Dog.

The “Millennium Dog Starter Pack”, also on the DAZ Store, injects 120 morphs into the MilDog LE, thus allowing a variety of popular large breeds to be created…

Also on the DAZ Store there is a “Real Fur for the Millennium Dog” pack (likely to send render times through the roof, if my experience of cat fur is anything to go by); the “Classic Canines Combo” provides a major textures pack; and the “Canine Journey Poses” pack….

Puppies and pup lovers are ably catered for by the DAZ Store’s “Millennium Puppy”.

If you want all the DAZ Store’s main dog and puppy packs, save by getting them in the combined “Ultimate Canine Bundle”.
A free MilDog accessory is a small dog crate.
There doesn’t appear to be a dog accessories pack, curiously. I’d have expected someone to make a dog toys / basket / brush / lead set by now. Nor do there appear to be any police & rescue services dog liveries.
The poor old Poser 8 “dog with no name” (a quality dog that shipped with Poser 8, designed by the famous Stonemason) doesn’t seem to have ever had much love. Content Paradise has a single lone pose set for him…

Lovers of small and toy dog breeds are not well catered for in the DAZ / Poser world. Some free morph sets were produced for the old Poser 4 dog — such as CloudCastle’s Dachshund; and Lyne’s Basset Hound which has also been extended with 3D Menagerie’s comprehensive set of Basset morps.
Meshbox has Mister Puggles which is a realistic pug dog for Poser 6…

Toon dogs (that are not too bizarre-looking) include 3D Universe’s Bacon…

Bacon has a Dog’s Life pose pack and Hound Dog textures packs on the DAZ Store.
Digital Creation’s Dawg is not too bad, but you may want to tone down the horrible specularity/bump-map combo that is supposed to be his hair texture…

Into science-fiction? Robot dogs include Renderosity’s Hell Hound Cyber-Dog which has very nice “worn” textures…

Need something sleeker? The OnTarget3D store has a free Mech Robot Dog Dinosaur…

Quality ‘demon dogs‘ include the DAZ Store’s “Gargoyle Hound” and its Demon Dogs Add-on Pack.
Renderosity also has this which might look good in darker lighting than it’s shown in here…

About ten years ago there was a very good stylised “Demon Dog” morph and texture pack for the old Poser 4 dog, but it appears to have vanished into the mists of history…

Similarly, there was also once an “Alien Dogs” pack of morphs and textures, along with a similar “Alien Cats” pack, but neither of these packs seem to be available anywhere now…

That’s it. Bow wow for now…
The well-known 3D environment/scene maker Stonemason has started a new series for DAZ Studio or Poser. “Worlds Of Fantasy : Medieval House” is the first, available now on the DAZ Store…

High-quality dinosaur designer Dinonaul has moved into Nursoda terrority, with this new “Where the Wild Things Are” standalone toon monster for Poser, called Echu…

A very cool new standalone character for DAZ Studio and Poser, recently released: Madam Shapoklyak. She’s by the same 3D artist who recently released the semi-toon standalone Sherlock Holmes and Watson figures. She looks like she could also work well with Doctor Pitterbill.

A fine-looking new set of sci-fi cargo containers, just arrived at Renderosity. Some of the best I’ve seen for DAZ Studio or Poser, and very suitable for everything from a superhero team’s “supercar garage” scene, to a thriller-style espionage scene…

Syd Mead is a major science-fiction artist, famous for his vehicle designs and futurological visions from the 1960s and 1970s, and also for his work on numerous famous movies. His alluring visions of a prosperous and immaculately-designed future Earth are still very influential today — as evidenced by the kind of prize money ($35k) put up for the recent Images of future transport: in the style of Syd Mead competition.
You may not have the draftsmanship skills of a Syd Mead, but — with a little help from Photoshop and DAZ — could you nevertheless create a Syd Mead -like CG artwork?
Well, perhaps. Syd doesn’t yet have his own line of branded DAZ Studio or Poser models. But until then, here’s my new survey of DAZ and Poser content, in which I dig out the best of the most Mead-like items…
CS City might provide a suitable background or two for vehicles and heavy-lifters…

Some of the Dystopia City Blocks buildings might also come in handy, and the first two packs of blocks are free.
The amazing Mars Vehicle is perhaps the most Mead like I’ve found…

Dystopian Aircar Aeronica V18…

Some of the Flying Cars set could also serve very well in a Mead-like scene, although sadly they’re for Bryce…

The Pacificator is also a good choice if you like the more Tron like models by Mead…

If you prefer flying motorcycles over cars, the J-Scooter 2 might suit…

Need figures for your artwork? The Bot Armor (id 8101) is for Victoria 4.2 Morphs++, and (apart from the high heels) has a pleasingly Mead-like retro-future look…

The JICC 3000 looks like he might just be a bot that belongs in a Mead painting…

If you have to get a curvaceous girl into your artwork, then 110.1 may be the one to have…

A couple of the heavy-lifter items in the Psi City Sector 2: Jat Cargo Set pack look like they might belong in the background of a Mead painting…

The Cargo 2 also looks like it has potential as a cargo-port craft…

The Gargola 901 could also serve as a heavy sky-tug for a sci-fi cargo yard…

A good heavy vehicle might be the Sci-Fi Truck – Heavy Duty…

… or the Ursus hovertruck…
By combining the wheels from the Storm Buggy with “Dino Truck” and removing the ‘dino inspection platform’, and flipping the whole thing around, you could get a fairly Mead-like heavy vehicle…

The Super Lorry is a 3DS model that looks like something from Mead’s famous U.S. Steel paintings of the 1960s…
For Moon scenes, there’s a cool Moon Rover…
And a free Survey Seeder for Google SketchUp. (Also converted for iClone).
Some of the Retro-Futuristic Furniture set could be retextured for less grime…

Finally, the GIS Orion interior has Mead-like tables and chairs…

You could also look at prop and vehicle models extracted from the Mass Effect videogames series. I’ve only played the first in the series, but I remember that the game takes some of its art design inspiration from Mead.
That’s it. Enjoy!
Poser Mocap has just released this promo video for their forthcoming Posermocap Swordplay Construction Kit Volume 1, featuring synchronised dual swordplay animations…
