The DAZ Hexagon 3d modelling software is currently on sale at $7.98. Somewhat old now, not having been developed for a few years, but fairly easy to learn and still perfectly capable of producing props and getting them to DAZ Studio and Poser in a quick way. I grabbed mine years ago, back when it was free, but it’s been full price for a while now. For your first step in learning it, Fugazi1968’s “Make your own Starfighter Tutorials” are well worth your $10, taking you through the basics in a very practical “let’s make something” way.

Digital Art Live magazine – winter issues catch-up
As we head into the really-leafy bit of the springtime, here’s a catch-up on last winter’s free monthly Digital Art Live magazine. The list below features the issues which have appeared since I last featured the magazine on this blog.
DAL is a Poser and DAZ -friendly magazine, devoted to science-fiction art and artists. It is currently regularly nudging 90-100 pages per issue, and is able to get in-depth interviews with the likes of Syd Mead. Next up is the Vue-themed issue, set for release any day now. Contact Paul to be put on the mailing-list and get your free copies. DAL will also soon be inviting advertising at very reasonable rates, so Poser / DAZ content vendors may also want to ask Paul about that.
Issue 12 : Second Skin, a Skin Art issue with a heavy Poser / DAZ contingent.
Issue 14 : Cybertronics. A Tron tribute issue for the mid-wintertime, with lots of glowing neon.
Issue 15 : Mystworlds, a tribute to the videogame Myst, with a lead interview with original Myst artist and animator Chuck Carter.
Issue 16 : Future Vehicles, with exclusive in-depth interview with Syd Mead.
Issue 17 : Movie Magic, on makers of VFX for movies and TV and more.
Poser and DAZ content: what’s new in April 2017
What’s new in the DAZ and Poser content in April 2017? Here’s my personal selection from the month’s new releases.
Sci-fi:
Morphing SciFi Glasses for G3F look like they could made flexible use of across a range of sci-fi and superhero characters, even if everyone is going to say “oh, that X-Men guy!” when they see it.
For something similar but more retro, the Project Zero Goggles for Poser.
Slime Attack for G3F is very unusual, and the slime models would also appear to have possibilities as standalone exports for ‘alien garden’ scenes.
Swamp Mushrooms by 1971s for Poser. Simple, but effective.
AJ Hibernation Hall for Poser.
Liquid Lab for DAZ Studio.
Missing those good ol’ Bryce 3D primitives? DAZ now has a pack of Impossible Objects.
A freebie, an iRay pack of Shimmery Sheer Fabrics suitable for sci-fi.
Aeon Soul’s new Proxy Outfit for Genesis 3 Female is an everyday cyberpunk style. No texture add-on packs yet, but Aeon Soul’s quality sci-fi clothes usually get one or more texture packs fairly swiftly.
Nostalgia:
The free Milkshake Props for DAZ iRay look like they’re worth a shake.
The Realigh Hopper 1970s Chopper bike, plus G3F and G3M preset poses. And if you want a ‘newspaper delivery-girl’-style duffel coat for the rider, there’s one in the new GaoDan Uniforms pack for G3F.
Historical:
Classic James Bond-style 1960s Mountain Cable Car with sliding door.
Coflek-gnorg’s Bunker Hill is a large freebie scene for Poser.
U.S. Musket is a very high quality recreation of a musket. There’s also a new Lee-Brooke Railway Gun from the American Civil War.
Shadow Jester Outfit for Genesis 3 Male looks a bit silly on a standard male, but would fit to a more suitable G3M character.
Tus – Persian Warrior Outfit for Genesis 3 Male is obviously fine workmanship and has a more toned-down texture pack.
There’s a new Ancient Celtic Adrian Hair and Beard for G3 Male.
There’s also a charging herd of male fantasy-historical centaurs on the DAZ Store this month, obviously high quality, but way too many content packs to link.
Steampunk and valvepunk:
New on Content Paradise. Meshbox’s old content can often be rather too low-poly since it was meant for old videogames, but their Steampunk Helicopter certainly looks nice and appears to have detailed engines. Beware that their stuff tended to use a single texture atlas, so swopping out the materials can be impossible.
Small town Newspaper Office of the 1910s-1930s, complete with a news-sheet printing press in the basement and a big bundle of period props.
Creatures:
‘Mr. SongBird Remix’ Ken Gilliland has a new creature, Nature’s Wonders Frogs with two common species created with his usual high quality and realistic approach. Certainly the best Poser frog I’ve yet seen, and I have a few in my runtime. His Renderosity Gallery suggests a “Giant Monkey Frog” morph may be forthcoming in volume 2.
AM has a rodent base and a squirrels morph and LAMH hair preset pack for it plus poses.
BoneZ for the HiveWire Big Cat gives you the base skeleton for things like museum displays, magazine illustration cut-aways, and horror scenes.
Somewhat similar to Sanctum Art’s old Drub figure, Res Mortifera plus Poses and Expressions.
Nature:
Dirty Mudyard is an unusual one, and might perhaps also double as part of a small harbour at low tide. The new Frozen Lake Scenery also looks like it could also help with a kitbash of a low-tide harbour scene. The Dirty Mudyard might also be used for the inside of a recent bomb crater that’s been rained on for a few weeks, and which your Res Mortifera monster (see above) rises up from.
Got ducks and dragonflies? The Harpwood Trail – Mallard Pond.
Stonemason also has a new similar water-side setting at Willow Creek.
Vue users have a base for an ornamental Palace Gardens and topiary. Also a large White Meadow frozen stream-side winter scene which looks superb and is currently a mere $8.
If you fancy something more steamy there’s a new Vue Jungle Scene.
Clearance:
I also see that the DAZ Store currently has a (mostly) sub-$5 clearance sale on many items, as well. Lots of characters mostly, rather than scenes and props, but on a quick skim-through I spotted:
Gothic Muse has an unusual skirt which may interest makers of steampunk scenes, to make background characters more interesting.
Anu-naki, a sci-fi V4 character by TheAntFarm which I wasn’t previously aware of.
AnimeEyes for V4 and Aiko 4 / Hiro 4, possibly useful for making comics with the Poser 11 comic book mode. On the DAZ forums you can also find a freebie set of Genesis presets for fitting the eyes to Genesis 1 in DAZ Studio. (If you need similar for Genesis 2 see DG Toon Style Eyes for Genesis 2 Female).
Swordist for M4, a big collection of sword and hand poses which fit a set of weapons made by Xurge.
The Moebius-style Space Mother head-dress for V4, which is actually fan-art for the Lotus character in the Warframe videogame. This toons up very nicely, in Poser’s Comic Book Mode with flat lighting.
Feral is set of quality cat-girl / cosplay poses for V4 and the Poser Furries Melody/Micah characters.
That’s it, more picks next month.
DAZ/Poser Content Survey: Halflings made easy in 3D
You don’t need a wizard to conjure up some halflings from Middle-Earth, just a copy of the free DAZ Studio and some content packs. Here’s my survey of the suitable content for making fan-art.
The following may contain spoilers, for the early chapters of the book, for those who’ve not yet read it.
The basic halfling:
The good thing about the following being Genesis 2 is that G2 can be easily imported to Poser, and can thus get Poser 11’s Comic Book Mode treatment.
Dwarf Creator for Genesis 2 Male.
Dwarf Clothes for Genesis 2 Male.
Dwarf Poses for Genesis 2 Male including pipeweed smoking and walking-with-a-staff poses. This includes a matching pipe and walking staff as props.
The above packs may use the name ‘dwarf’ on the store, to avoid the wrath of the Tolkien estate (‘halfling’ and ‘middle earth’ are fine, as they were in use pre-Tolkien). But in terms of body shape and feet, it’s really the only DAZ / Poser halfling worth having.
There is however, and also for Genesis 2, the rather neglected Ferdibrand Goodchild for Genesis 2 Male character. Perhaps suitable as a Woody End inn-keeper, but he would need adapting to look far more rustic and Shire-like and less Byzantine. I’ve been unable to discover any ‘rustic Ferdibrand’ materials makeover packs, or any other add-ons. He might also provide the foundation for making a large rural halfling of the Farmer Maggot type.
Better faces:
Most of the Dwarf Creator promo faces don’t look right to me, as they’re too pixie-like and pinched. Halflings eat well in the Shire, what with ‘second breakfasts’ and all, and their faces should generally be far rounder and more cheery. Dwarf Creator for Genesis 2 Male does have some face morphs, but to get a movie-quality halfling face you might also want to have Genesis 2 Male Head Morphs installed.
Hair:
Wyatt Hair for Genesis 2 Male, for which you probably want to play with adding extra curls.
Michael 6 Sport Dynamic Hair for Genesis 2 Male.
Jordan hair for Genesis.
Also see Gurumarra for Genesis 2 Male, for the hair.
Hairy feet:
Real Hairy for Genesis 2 Male has foot hair as polygons. It’s applied in a modular manner and there are hair modules for… “knuckles and toes. Each module has its own morphs for length, thickness, clumping, wetness as well as color and glossiness options.” However, even that might not do it, as I get the impression that some of the most robust halflings have something akin to curly “woolly” sheep-like hair on their feet. Some post-work painting of hair, using Photoshop, may still be needed for certain types of halfling.
More clothing options:
Work Clothes for Genesis 2 Male. An impractical collar, but it includes useful dirty texture sets.
Steampunk Working Class for G2M, for a good plain base of Sam-like gardening shirt and trousers on which you could build an outfit.
Poses:
Props:
You’ll probably want to avoid the Meshbox Halfling Village (versions 1.0 and 2.0 alike) series, as they are too old and low-poly now, and use a single texture map so can’t be easily re-textured.
Mortem Vetus has a rustic pipe and bedroll, both freebies for Poser.
Classic Pipe Collection has a long-stem pipe suitable for the best Longbottom Leaf.
The Party Tree might be Giant Tree DR from quality maker Dinoraul, and Ancient Tree by DarioFish would also be a good choice.
There’s an old Doors pack for Poser that has a ‘Hobbit Hole.cr2’ in it, and a hinged door which opens. It’s old, so needs re-texuring, but you may find it your runtime if you have a decade-old collection. It looks like a good starting base for quality hi-res retexturing.
Walking over The Shire, to the Woody End:
Vue’s Walk in the Forest is a fairly good approximation of the ‘neglected cart road’ which takes the back way from Hobbiton to the Woody End. Note that for this to work properly you need to have installed Large European Ash-Summer sparse foliage / Broad Leaf Straight Trunk / Alder-Late Summer / and Long Grass, all shipping in the Vue Infinite/xStream default free-content pack.
Poseable Trees with Ivy is less realistic and more storybook. It’s a bit bare in terms of ground cover and thus would need either a good low-poly ground-cover pack, or lot of grass and low herbs ‘Photoshopped in’ at the postwork stage.
Campfire and Cooking Set. Also Campfire which is self-illuminating and casts light, in Poser.
Survivors Backpack by Cybertenko for M4 would need modification of its modern textures, but it looks fairly useful as ‘Sam’s big pack’ if you can convert it for G2M.
Luthbel’s Dragonworld: Wildenlander for V3 also has a softer and less-square backpack prop to fit V3, and it also has a water-bag.
Other Shire characters:
Oskarsson’s HellHorse and Dynamic Wraith for V4, both for Poser. For the horse, note that the… “Materials will not work in Daz Studio” and I can’t quickly find any free DAZ MATs for it.
Also look at Soul Nexus for the original Millennium Horse.
Robed aged wizards with big pointy/floppy hats are, of course, very common and they really deserve their own content survey. Storybook dwarves, likewise.
Lastly, as an alternative to the Dwarf Creator for G2M, Nursoda’s Gosha could also be looked at if you want a crowd of background halflings, since you might want a less memory-intensive base character for that than G2.
Big spring Clearance sale at Renderosity
I do love it when quality content goes below $5. Renderosity currently have an “all items at $3.50” spring sale on all the items in their store’s large Clearance area. I spotted the following $3.50 goodies among the 643,000 variants of V4 + glamour clothes…
Of special interest to Vue users:
Curious Greenhouse for Vue. Although note that it’s also currently on the Cornucopia store in a nice $5 bundle (with Curious Stacked Shack and Curious Shaker Row).
Curious Mason Jar Lantern for Vue, an add-on for the Greenhouse. Note that… “the flame will glow beautifully in a Global Radiosity Atmosphere” in Vue. Another add-on for the greenhouse is the new free pair of Gloves for M4 and V4 on Renderosity.
Makers of mountain scenes in Vue might be able to use the realistic Austrian Pine and Eastern White Cedar in .vob and .obj, and the gnarled Jeffrey Pine by Dinoraul.
Flinks Instant Meadow 2 – Weeds 3 and Flinks Dandelion for Poser.
Temple of the Shadows and Papyrus Boats.
Looking rather old now, but IanMPalmer’s Desert Village might just about pass for a distant town in a southwestern USA scene or on Tattoine (Star Wars).
Cydonia 3 for Vue is a sci-fi city backdrop in 3D.
The Tenement is an old American city tenement building from the 1880s-1950s.
Mega Real Cave Pack (.OBJs only) and additional Fantasy Rock Formations.
The 7 Keepers of Magic castle is not really my thing, but it would certainly be an impressive medieval fantasy castle to have rising up from a large Alpine forest.
Beau Quartier, a construction set of classic Parisian rooftops and building facades for building large city scenes of pre-car Paris.
While you’re at Renderosity, you might pick up Coflek-Gnorg’s quality free new Bunker Hill 20th century war scene.
Creatures:
Swidhelm’s Robustus and Iuvenis and Tyrannosaur dinosaur with its impressive skin texture. Six poses come with the Tyrannosaur, and there are more elsewhere on Renderosity in another pack by Swidhelm.
There’s also Swidhelm’s Fluvialanguis which appears to be a fantasy-prehistoric crocodile.
FA Tavrohk. Not especially impressive seen up-close, but… “everything possible has been done to ensure that the creature uses very little memory, so you can load a whole herd even on systems with modest amounts of RAM [memory]”. So far as I can tell, there are no alternative free textures or poses or horn types out there for the Tavrohk. The Bolladon and the Moo are probably more suitable for use as similar ‘alien planet’ herd beasts, for science-fiction landscape artists.
Snow Leopard by AM for Poser. Poorly served by its promo pictures, but like AM’s SaberTooth Reloaded it has excellent pre-applied fur which renders quickly.
MS13 War Mammoth Armour. Requires the DAZ base African Elephant and its Columbian Mammoth add-on, but it appears that the Mammoth is no longer sold. Some will have that in their runtime, but it’s there called mammuth so you’d never find it via search. If you don’t have it then I’m guessing that, with some wrangling, the armour rig might be made to fit onto DAZ’s LAMH Wooly Mammoth?
Poisen’s War Banners .OBJs could accompany your army of Frazetta-style war mammoths.
Also note the set of Cat Poses for the Millenium Cat, if you need more in your runtime.
Sci-fi:
SteamPunk BFG and V4 poses.
The alien Octos for M4.
Lair – Eco character preset for V4. The previews leave it uncertain if this is full-figure, or only waist-up.
Oskarssons Neon and Neon Materials. Note that these are both the later DAZ Studio edition, not the earlier Poser one, and that “she works fairly well with most Genesis poses.”
The Divine Order by Oskarsson for V4 and Aiko 4.
Atom-0-Ray Guns. Not well depicted by its naff main promo picture, but the design is nicely retro and there’s a huge set of parented poses for V4 and M4 in the classic pulp-art style.
Coflek-Gnorg’s very detailed cyberpunk YAKUZA Hacking Device and Sci-fi Portals set.
Steampunk:
Flying Cadet Lola Pepper for V4.
Lola-ready props on Clearance include SteamPunk Study props and Steam Props and SteamPunk Wand.
Madness Lab looks a bit basic in terms of textures. But it could be useful for those making a comic strip using Poser 11’s Comic Book mode, with characters such as Doctor Pitterbill and Lenore (and her Raven), and the Lab is more or less in the Lenore style. Also of interest in that context may be The Back, also on Clearance.
Privateer Twin Hull U-boat submarine.
Cryo Chamber, SkyCaptain3D’s first model.
1971s has a SkySmall Boat and Sky Boat on Clearance sale, along with a few of his other sky-craft.
Popular characters, new looks + props/clothes:
Shylee for the Mavka character, for which there’s a fair bit of faery/fantasy clothing available. Mavka is also supported by the Crossdresser clothing conversion software.
Steampunk Pitterbill clothing for Doctor Pitterbill.
The semi-toon Grandpa. Although note that Grandpa requires M4, M4 Morphs++ and Capsces’s Morphus morphs pack (the latter no longer sold?) to work. Still works without Morphus, but it’s not quite so toony.
Kali Fairy for Nursoda’s Kali.
V4 Gaia Poses for V4 Gaia.
Mongolian Princess for V4, which looks like a starting point for making a second-trilogy Star Wars princess.
And lastly… don’t sniff at V4, she’s got Biscuits Noses for V4… with noses “custom sculpted in Zbrush”! 🙂
That’s it. I skimmed through everything in Clearance, and that’s the stuff which caught my eye.
What’s New for Poser and DAZ – March 2017
It’s time for the monthly survey of what’s new in the world of content for Poser and Daz Studio. Here’s what caught my eye, in March 2017.
Characters and clothes:
Dale for Genesis 3 Male is a distinctive character, who could serve in a role as a sensitive craftsman or a spaceship’s ‘alien ecosystem’ expert. He comes with fibremesh goatee and eyebrows…
Adaptable new sci-fi clothing from veteran designers like Aeon Soul is always a treat, and especially when it’s made for males. Such as the new 20.50 Cyberpunk Everyday Clothes for Genesis 3 Male…
Hair and headwear:
Poisen’s new HelmetZ 3 is the third expansion pack for the wonderful Helmetz series for Poser, and you also get a folder of .OBJ files alongside the Poser files…
Sci-fi Head Gear for Genesis 3 Females and Males…
Gwennili Hair for Genesis 3 female is a very nice freebie from Kayleyss and is inspired by a hairstyle to be found in the recent The Witcher 3 videogame…
Toon and storybook:
DAZ Studio’s Real Toon Expressions for Toon Generations 2 for Genesis 3.
FairyTale Furniture as .OBJ or for Bryce…
Old Windmill for Poser, a freebie from VanishingPoint. Possibly a bit of an old model newly converted for Poser, but it should still look fine in the far distance of a storybook scene. The sails can be animated in Poser…
The AntFarm is developing a very appealing line of Nursoda-like characters, and his latest is Kobold Woodland Spirit for DAZ Studio, currently nicely priced with an introductory offer. Both .FBX and .DAE exports get badly crushed on import to Poser but Kobold can be successfully taken to Poser for Comic Book Mode, with pose intact, using a basic .OBJ export.
Animated lip-synced Talking Kitten? It’s now a possibility, with the new Talking Kitten for the HiveWire Housecat kitten. There’s also a set of 18 PuddyTat Poses for the HiveWire Housecat.
Creatures:
The Great Kraken, a squiddy sea monster for DAZ Studio. Might also look interesting small, re-textured with some luminous stripes, and placed in a sci-fi lab tank…
Need a demonic moggie? SkeleCat for the HiveWire Big Cat…
Need a robot dinosaur? The new R.A.P.T.O.R. and R.A.P.T.O.R. Battle Poses…
Steampunk and valvepunk:
Freakshow Tent for DAZ Studio.
Also in the sideshow section, a bucking Mechanical Bull by Coflek-gnorg, which might even be given a steam-driven copper-plated steampunk makeover. Perhaps pop a clock-face dial texture on the central circle…
This valvepunk Snowmobile is nicely quirky…
Oskarsson’s The Great Library is a scene where you may struggle to get satisfactory low-level camera angles, but this certainly is a very good-looking library with a pleasingly fantasy/steampunk edge…
1920s Explorer:
Ancient Egypt Exhibit is for DAZ Studio, but looks like it would also look good in Vue (via a Collada .DAE export) provided you’re willing to wrestle it to get the camera angles…
Ancient Egypt Exhibit might be combined with the new The Wraithgate from Orestes, and the M4 World War I Headwear Pack II. The latter is a freebie and includes a good Michael 4 Pith Helmet…
Cornucopia has a delightfully ratty old Swampboat / Riverboat for Vue, with detailed interior and many accessories…
Natural scenes:
With Vue 2016 and Poser 11 now both fully patched up, speeded up and talking nicely to each other, now seems like the time for those with fast multi-core CPUs to take another look at using Vue — especially if you want to render Poser scenes that require lush natural landscapes or rich atmospheres. (Note that Vue’s rendering isn’t speeded up by a faster graphics card, as its final rendering is CPU based).
There’s a complete traditional Medina oasis settlement for DAZ Studio, which might also be adapted to serve as a future or off-world setting found in the cult videogames such as Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (which opens in Casablanca in the year 2219) and Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (which starts largely in the town of Balmora). Might be combined with the new Tropical Palm Trees for Daz Studio.
And if you need a large city then the Medina is accompanied by a fascinating sounding Cityscape Generator script for auto-generating vast low-poly 3D backgrounds…
And how will your camel reach the Medina? Perhaps take the new Wild Road for Vue, available at Cornucopia…
DryJack’s Railway Cutting is a fairly simple scene, but this .OBJ could save someone a lot of time in Vue if they wanted to set up a lush summertime steam train scene. DryJack also has a host of other beautifully modeled British train line scenes and props…
Sci-fi scenes:
There’s a very appealing Tomorrowland-style / Mass-Effect-style Sci-Fi Square from Mely3d…
If you have a need for secret underground test facilities, also have a look at Mely3D’s Secret Underground Base and Mecha Hangar.
Dominator Planet from Petipet…
Ahead of the release of the Blade Runner sequel later in 2017, the new Stonemason scene Urban Future 5 is well worth a look, and can of course be used as an expansion for the other Stonemason scenes in his series.
And finally, free tentacular Repair Drones that should work well with Stonemason’s Urban Future 5…
That’s it, more next month!
DAZ/Poser Content Survey: Ancient Celtic
Inspired by the new discovery of some Iron Age Celtic gold torcs near my home (the Leekfrith torcs), I thought I would undertake a new Poser/DAZ Content Survey for this blog. The theme is Ancient Celtic, trying to steer toward somewhat-authentic historical recreation, rather than barbarian fantasy or modern ‘gift-shop style’ Celtic-wear or Leprechaun tartan.
There’s not a great mound of specifically Ancient Celtic content out there, so some of the following suggests mixing and matching and re-working much late Saxon, Viking and even Roman-era content.
Clothing:
Genesis 2 has Celtic Maeve Outfit and Celtic Fionn Outfit, and the latter looks to have especially nice ‘looks-authentic’ boots.
Although meant to be oriental Sarsa’s Fighting Monk for Genesis 2 Male and Fighting Monk Textures give you a believable looking waistband and leggings.
The Hunters for Genesis 2 Female has a good fur cloak of the correctly square type, but for the fur you’re required to load the Look at My Hair preset with the Look At My Hair fur-ifying plugin for DAZ Studio.
Norsemen I for Viking for Genesis 2 Male which requires Viking for Genesis 2 Male…
Medieval Countrymen for Peasant Outfit for Genesis 3 Male…
Medieval Cloaks for Genesis 3 Female…
Tattered and Torn for M3 Hooded Cloak and V4 Hooded Cloak, because the Celts are in a wet and usually rather muddy environment, and not all of them are going to be walking any distance in their best finery. Possibly good for middle-distance extras in a village scene.
Dark and Moody has the required plaid texture for Dynamic Cloak for V4/M4…
Highland Lad for Genesis 1…
Shawls appear to have been a big thing in Celtic life, rather than bear-fur shoulder-pads. So Camelot Texture Pack for the DNA Morphing Shawl for the DNA Morphing Shawl For V3 may be useful.
See also the Dynamic Evening Gown and Drape for Victoria 4.
Russian Ladies for V3/V4 may offer some possibilities with re-textured headscarves…
Guarded Heart Clothing for G2F also has adaptable-looking heavier winter headwear…
The Rachel Dynamic Tunic and Shawl for V4 is Biblical, but could also be adapted with some suitable textures.
Hair:
Dragonsbane Barbarian Hair and Beard for Dragonsbane Barbarian Character HD for Genesis 3 Male…
Milen Hair for Genesis 2 Female and Male…
Fishtail Braids has a nice chunky look to it…
There was a lot of Viking content published about 18 months ago, and there are probably quite a few other suitable braided semi-windblown hairstyles around.
For a neater and more ‘Galadriel’ look, try Nimue Hair for Genesis 2 Female and for a more ‘wild Irish coleen’ look try Piratess Hair for Genesis 1 and 2.
Adornment:
There are neck torcs (torques) in the ensemble costume sets in Woodgod M4 H4, Hyperborean for V4, Aether for V4 and the Red Sonja-alike Briana Culaith for V4 / A4…
There’s also a nice torc in Celtic Jewel for M4 along with bracelets and metal armbands…
Sadly the 3D torcs in Arki’s CernunnosCircle range were retired when the Runtime DNA store closed.
Power Barbarian for V4 is a fantasy-girl barbarian, but the neck-fur could go well in a winter scene with another warrior outfit…
Battle:
Warrior Monk for Genesis 3 Male looks later, rather “Black Sea circa 400 A.D.”, but the shield looks nice and has a worn texture MAT. Although generally the Celtic shields were long and oblong.
Celtic Warrior for M4 looks a little basic, but he might be useful if you need a dozen M4s in the middle-distance for a battle-scene. Apparently the helmets were like that, even though it may seem rather too “Lord of The Rings” to many modern eyes.
Scenes:
Celtic Great Hall for House of Mog Ruith is a bit Lord of The Rings, but with some thatch on the roof it might be suitable. As far as I know no-one has made a thatch / aged expansion for it.
Although 1,000 years or so later, Saxon Settlement by Merlin is detailed and high-quality, and will give you two types of primitive huts needed for a Northern European village setting.
For settlement clutter, Viking Village Props has an especially nice fish-rack…
DM’s Stones of Graith is the usual DM quality, and might be merged with Ancient Tree.
Karacairns has some archaic-looking monoliths with carved stylised designs, though these are more Pictish than Celtic. There’s also the basis of a large round-barrow (minus turf) in the pack.
Merlin’s Celtic Stones in OBJ also look useful.
That’s it. Slange!

Poser/DAZ content – new for February 2017
Well, it’s nearly the end of February. Which means it’s time for a look at the new releases for Poser and DAZ. As usual, it’s just my personal selection of what caught my eye and wallet. It’s been a pretty good month for affordable 3D content, and it’s not yet quite over.
Storybook:
Storybook illustrators may like this complete Hazel outfit and props for Genesis 3 female…
Fantasy:
The Armisael Wings for Genesis 3 and Victoria. Expensive, but it’s nicely cross-compatible with either Poser or DAZ Studio.
RawArt’s Frost Giant for Genesis 3 Male…
DA Let There Be Moss. “A system for adding moss to any object in a scene” in DAZ Studio. Possibly useful for faerie scenes and quickly adding new detail to older scenes which have muddy rock/tree textures.
Historical scenes:
WW2 Anderson Shelter. A typical back-yard bomb shelter scene, from the British Home Front in the Second World War…
I’m not a big fan of yet more medieval stuff, these days. But I have to tug my peasant forelock to Dante78 for his new Medieval Peasant House for Poser. It’s the usual very high quality and detail from Dante78, and if sunk down into the ground a bit it might also pass for a more primitive Iron Age structure. It also has a generic fantasy-game type interior.
The woodsman who lives here probably looks like the new Dragonsbane Barbarian Hair and Beard for Genesis 3 Male (for Dragonsbane Barbarian Character HD)…
Missing Jet is a crashed light aircraft / modern Robinson Crusoe scene complete with campsite and wolf-defying treetop bivouac. Possibly a scene that’s also useful in Vue, with some of the DAZ foliage stripped off and Vue trees/ecosystem substituted.
Lucky Vue users have a big new historical scene “Mel’s Drive In”, which might perhaps be given a sci-fi twist with flying cars and hover-bikes and retro robots…
This drive-in scene might be customised and enhanced in Photoshop, by being composited together with a render from the new Marquee Letters for DAZ Studio.
Science fiction:
The Gynoid_Tronic might work well in zero-gravity, inside the 2001-like minimalism of the new Echo Lima Halls…
A well-designed unusual sci-fi dress is MMLT Dress Set For V4 Elite A4.
Hr-175 Spectrum offers Victoria 4 hair as giant corn-row plaits, with a whole load of colour MATs. Possibly working well with the above MMLT Dress Set. Also likely to be useful alternative hair for something like a Trek-style sci-fi command-deck scene with several V4 ‘deck crew’ extras in the background.
There’s a nice sort-of late-1970s / mid-80s vibe to FaceMod for the new 2ndGen standalone robot figure for Poser.
Retro sci-fi pulp-art fans have a cool new 1960s-style monster, Kytis for Genesis 2 Male alien.
Also looking rather fun are the Swarmz Raiders. Definitely one for artists needing an unusual and fresh monster for your Doctor Who etc fan-art (although the TV would give them a chunky genital-concealing belt). I especially like the idea of their teleporting / inter-dimensional-shifting MAT texture — all sci-fi monsters should have such an easy-apply texture option bundled with them…
Need to send in the jets to destroy the Swarmz Raiders? KX Pilot Helmet for Genesis 3 female looks like a usefully generic prop…
Or perhaps the Swarmz Raiders can be taken out with the Dominator Crab, Petipet’s new mega-turret. Currently sensibly priced at an introductory $11.87…
Now that’s what I call a sci-fi turret. In terms of its design the Dominator works alongside Petipet’s similar Sci-fi Tank, Sci-fi UFO, Military Module and Dominator. Possibly these are manned (bugged?) by the new Mantisaran race…
Steampunk:
Abandoned Train Station could, with a bit of makeover (remove modern warning lines/decals, add rusty old steam trains) become a steampunk or valvepunk scene.
The lovely AJ SteamFlyer 2.0 is now in a “new version of the previous ‘Steam Flyer For Poser’ package”. Now tested and tweaked for DAZ Studio and iRay, by the looks of it…
DryJack is continuing to produce beautifully crafted models for British 20th century steam-railway enthusiasts.
10 Downing Street, famously the home of the British Prime Minister. Complete with detailed interior, but I’d only want the famous door. Perhaps Blue Tree Studios might consider also making a cheaper frontage-only package?
I see Blue Tree Studios also has the new Steampunk Slum. I like its wibbly-wobbliness…
Serenading his beloved in the yard of the Steampunk Slum might be the One Man Band for Genesis 3 Male. Includes the usefully-generic top hat for G3M…
Everyday:
Millennial Business Casual Outfit for Genesis 3 Male is a generic ‘millennial boy’ look. The hair is Heath Hair for Genesis 3 Male(s) & Female(s)…
Man About Town for Genesis 3 Male(s) is a generic ‘online start-up / crowd-funder’ kind of chap.
Oh My Body Hair for Genesis 3 Male is “nine morphing fiber hair models” for G3M, for easy body hairiness…
Animals:
HiveWire Cougar for the Hivewire Big Cat…
18 PuddyTat Poses for the HiveWire House Cat. The Hivewire House Cat also has a BNB Talking Cat add-on for Poser, for speech, and also emotion dials for human-like emotions.
Helpers:
Finally there are some possibly-useful helpers for Poser and DAZ Studio this month:
Flamer – A flame tool for Poser. Flamer is a basic “prop with shaping morphs used to create various fire objects such as fireballs, rocket flames, flames for torches and candle.” Could be useful for that time when you need a quick adjustable rocket exhaust or candle flame. So far as I can tell, you don’t also get presets with the emissive light shown in the store preview.
FaceGen Artist Pro lets you create DAZ Studio Genesis 2 or 3 heads from just one or two real-life photos of people. Windows-only.
BOSS Pro Light Set for Portraits & Promos in DAZ Studio, complete with place-holder mannequins to indicate exactly where to position your characters for the best results.
Lastly Hands Dial-up for Genesis 3 Male and Female is a big set of hand poses plus control dials.
That’s it. Another pick next month.
New Poser/DAZ content in January 2017
So what’s new and eye-catching in the DAZ Studio / Poser stores, since late December 2016? I see that the remaining content from Runtime DNA has continued to pop up on Hivewire (Scene Toy Pro for Poser) and Renderosity (creepy clowns), presumably as vendors get time to upload and price it.
There’s a new flagship HiveWire House Cat: Kitten at HiveWire. Requires the adult HiveWire House Cat.
A Sakura Extreme Detail cherry tree, from new vendor Whitemagus, possibly an ideal setting for your romping new kittens.
Aeon Soul’s popular V4 Tau Ceti Overseer armour arrives for Genesis 3 Female, along with an XPS expansion pack.
A detailed generic Time Gate or inter-dimensional gate.
Atlas Rover is for Poser, but looks like a vehicle probably best seen looming up into a Vue atmosphere.
The AntFarm’s Twiglet Wood Spirit is lovely, and also currently sensibly priced at $10.47.
Robbus Goblin HD for Genesis 3 Male has a lot of detail and character.
EleBeast for Genesis 3 Male also has both detail and character.
A storybook flying fishing boat, by 1971s.
Need a fish for your fishing boat to catch? Dinosaur expert Dinoraul has a new Fantasy Fish.
Vanessa Marquise Outfit for Genesis 3 Female looks like a good steampunk outfit base.
Sadly no President Trump -alikes for M4, this month. I would have thought that someone would have spotted that opportunity by now.
Poser and DAZ Content Survey: the 2016 round-up
Here’s my personal survey of what I think are the most notable items released in mid and late 2016 for the DAZ and Poser content ecosystem. The survey has been made by trawling as far back as I can go on with the store “what’s new” pages, and my wishlists and my runtime. It’s been about ten months since my last such survey.
It’s been another good year for content, but also a year of change at several stores. One of the most notable changes was of course the denuding (and now effective closure) of Runtime DNA. Some content vendors have gone to HiveWire, some to the DAZ Store, a few to their own stores or even into retirement. Buyers may thus see apparently “new things” on stores that are actually older content from RuntimeDNA being transferred and uploaded. Thankfully I was familiar enough with the old RuntimeDNA range to know which items are really new, and which not.
Animals:
New content vendor Herschel Hoffmeyer makes a splash with a big Tyrannosaurus Rex as his first release. Dinoraul has dinosaurs pretty much covered, though, so you have to wonder what other niche Hoffmeyer’s obvious talents will make their mark in. Sci-fi “future-hybrid” creatures, perhaps?
Also making a big splash is The HumpBack Whale, a new highly detailed model with plenty of skins and poses.
The whale might be combined with Sea Beast.
A new cat is always welcome and the HiveWire House Cat and a HiveWire Big Cat and quality kitties.
Cuter still is Fennec for Foxes by AM which is an addon for Foxes by AM. Comes with Look at my Hair fur presets.
The HiveWire Gorilla for Dusk (free) and HiveWire Gorilla Poser fur also looks fun. HiveWire has also rolled out a whole lot of jungle content around their gorilla and big cat.
In that context note also Stonemason’s new Jungle Construction Kit, Abandoned Temple, Mayan Ruins and Fern Lake Bundle. Also the pose set Gladiator for Victoria 7 and Michael 7 where the poses are keyed to fighting a big cat (a DAZ Big Cat 2, rather than the HiveWire ones) hand-to-claw.
Talking of nature, it seems that the Poser 11-friendly versions of Vue, such as VUE Studio 2016, have recently been released. Certainly there are viable order pages for them now. Previously it was only the top-of-the-line Vue 2016 that had been released.
In nature there has been a surprising lack of quality small lizards until recently, but now Poser nature expert Ken Gilliland has produced a fine set of Nature’s Wonders: Lizards of the World which now has four packs. As always with Ken’s careful work, they’re accurate for real species and could be used for illustrations on nature-reserve information boards and booklets. I’d love to see him do a “Lizards of the British Isles” pack sometime, though I guess we’re behind hotter countries that have brighter prettier lizards.
I seem to remember that perhaps half of Ken’s Birds of Prey series for Poser, addons for Songbird Remix, were also newly released in 2016.
Environments and interiors:
Great designers such as Stonemason and 1971s continued to produce very high-quality architecture-based scenes, of course, each in their different way. Other architectural environments I noted were…
Abandoned Lighthouse for a mere $11.95. Vue only. There’s also a lighthouse-style Ham Radio Equipment set for DAZ Studio.
Medieval Scriptorium. There is a lot of medieval stuff around, and it’s easy to get tired of it. But I don’t think I’ve seen a scriptorium around before, and certainly not one this good…
BB3D Environments: Medieval Study could possibly be used as an external corridor with the scriptorium.
Aslan Theater (requires Aslan Court 3 and its Iray Addon)
Classic New York Brownstones of the Greenwich Village type. The perfect home for a 1920s pulp writer, and as such it might be paired with Newsstand.
Beyond the Clock, an unusual “inside the clocktower” interior.
Santa’s Toy Workshop and a very well designed Christmas Snow Globe.
Restricted Zone is usefully generic, lending itself to “Area 52-style” UFO tales or spy/thriller situations.
Faery, wood spirits and similar:
Sticks the Wood Spirit. The fingertips seem a little under-detailed, but most of the time they’re going to be hidden in grass anyway.
I can imagine a storybook where Sticks the Wood Spirit may come out of the woods and live in The Gardeners Potting Shed for a while. Old Garden – Structures could provide additional environment for the Shed. A Typical British Farmyard might also be a setting.
The Forest King for Genesis 3 Male might also play a part in such a story.
Your heroine in such a story might wear the Melidae Crown for Genesis 3 Female.
Dandelion for Genesis 3 Female
Sci-fi:
Spaceship Laboratory and matching Spaceship Command Center and Spaceship Crew Room. All from PerspectX, a new name to me. By another vendor, SS Marcoor Control Room would also fit with these.
Dominator is an all-purpose “destroy the planet!” do-hickey, which can also double up as an invasion fleet.
SciFi Medusa is a future VR helmet with cyber-tentacles!
2075 Feral Assassin X for Genesis 3 Female is an unusual “human kitty”.
Alien Relics and a Planet X-2 and Planet X-3 DAZ Studio landscape for them.
The BnB Cephalotus would make fun ‘alien planet’ plants. What if they arrived on earth? I can imagine a storybook or comic that paired these with the Songbird ReMix Kiwis to comedic effect. The Cephalotus can speak, sing, with lip-sync in Poser.
Flora Imaginarum offers more ‘alien planet’ plants.
Toon:
B-Bot and B-Bot Add On.
Dr Pitterbill Hobo and Dr Pitterbill Hobo Textures, for Nursoda’s Doctor Pitterbill.
Toon Generations 2 for Genesis 3
Missing the great Nursoda? Take a look at Mythical Pixie for Genesis 3 Male and Impish Poses.
Clothing:
As America prepares to get back to work in January, Construction Worker Outfit for Genesis 2 and Genesis 3 looks like a timely addition to the runtime.
Too late now for Christmas but Mr and Mrs Klaus is very professionally designed and detailed.
Horror From the Deep is one for H.P. Lovecraft fans, and there’s also the new Blind Demon which is obviously a Night Gaunt when you add Wings of The Fallen.
Elven Weapon Bundle, worth seeing just for the preview renders alone.
Pioneer Airman for Genesis 3 Male and Female
For a similar but grittier look try Rough Rider for Genesis 3 Male.
Retro Skirt for Genesis 3 Female. The title is a bit confusing, as it seems the jacket is also included. Has a nice sort of “1840s” feel about it, which could make your 1890s steampunk feel a bit fresher.
Wise Sensei for Genesis 3 Male and an Asian River fishing hamlet scene for him. With a bit of tweaking and runtime-bashing he could also pass as a Bronze Age trader in Europe, of the sort found frozen in the ice a few years ago.
Poses:
MightyMite has continued to churn out pack after pack of comic book hero poses, and I’m told they’re good useful stuff. Anyone making superhero comics with Poser no longer needs a ‘pose scrapbook’ or similar, or to scrabble around in other pose sets.
Ironman13 (i13) has produced a much-needed wide range of quality poses and expressions for the DAZ Genesis 3 characters, often with mix-and-matching eye position and hand presets. For instance, i13 All Life’s Pleasures
Hair:
Pompadour Hair for G3M and M7 is a very fashionable style that seems to be worn by all the cool boys these days. Also look at Rodi Clean Cut Hair Style for Genesis 3 Male. Could go well with sci-fi, given a few white/silver shades.
Shaders:
320 x Quality SuperFly Shader Materials for Poser 11 SuperFly renders. Ignore the scary manual — you can just drag-and-drop these onto your model or character, and you don’t need to get into node editing or understanding the mind-bending theory of how such shaders actually work.
Tutorials:
Digital Art Live now has some of their training webinar recordings on the DAZ Store, such as Daz Studio Content Creation Mastery: Rendering Top Promos & Preparing Products for Sale.
Licensing:
There’s now a Stonemason Indie Game Developer License for many of the Stonemason environments.
That’s it!
A gap in the Poser / DAZ content market
A set of traditional English Morris dancers for Poser and DAZ. So far as I know there’s nothing out there that fits the description, but it’s an opportunity for a content maker. One could even develop a wider line in ‘Old English traditions’…
Art by Steve Shaw.
My Black Friday haul of goodies
So, let’s tot up what Black Friday bargains I’ve had tonight and today. In total, taking into account coupons and some store credit, my PayPal is down by just $28.00. Not a bad haul, for the spend. And there’s still a chunk of PayPal balance left for software or a plugin, if a deal suddenly pops up via Facebook through Cyber Monday.
Stryke Angel for Star!. Because… sci-fi! And it’ll soon be back up at an eye-watering $16 again. Can be converted for other characters via Crossdresser.
Lil Star Witch for Star!, not so much for the outfit itself but rather to give access to mix-and-matching bits of it with other Star! outfits, and to take advantage of freebies that may need the hat.
Dr Pitterbill Hobo outfit. Opens up new possibilities for Pitterbill in rural and gardening illustration and cartooning work.
HFS Environments: Ancient Tree. Trans-mapped leaves though, so it probably won’t play nicely with Poser’s Comic Book Mode. Note that Ostestes Trees (DAZ Store) do have polygon leaves though, so they work fine with the Comic Book Mode.
Steampunk Classics-Lamp. I see there’s also an animated rig for this on Runtime DNA. Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
Advanced Shaders Launcher 1.5 for Poser and its Colorize add-on. Update: No longer works in Poser 11.
Adventurer Set for the semi-toon SuzyQ 2. Useful for converting via Crossdresser. The boots will be especially useful for other characters, and good pith helmets are rare.
Black Friday Sales 2016 – the survey
It’s 9pm Thursday evening UK time, and here are the Black Friday -to- Cyber Monday deals I’ve spotted so far:
The DAZ and Poser stores:
* The DAZ Store has a 30% off page. Some of the content creators also have heavy discounts. Nothing in my WishList is discounted though.
* Renderosity. No sign of any Black Friday content sale yet, though the Poser 11 software is discounted (see below).
* Content Paradise. No sign of any Black Friday sale yet.
* Hivewire 3D. No sign of any Black Friday sale yet.
* Cornucopia 3D (for Vue users). A nice range of What’s On Sale? items, but no specific Black Friday discounts yet.
* Runtime DNA has 60% off all content remaining in the store. Hmmm… login. Wishlist is still working? Oh yes, though it’s rather depleted these days. I see that a number of Crossdresser licenses are still available and discounted, including Cookie. Advanced Shaders Launcher script for Poser, get the complete set for $7. So I loaded up on various items at RuntimeDNA.
Then I unloaded — because for some really annoying reason, the RuntimeDNA site no longer accepts PayPal payments wholly in dollars. If you’re in the UK you now have to pay partly in dollars and partly in pounds, which makes the purchase a lot more expensive for someone who holds and wants to pay in U.S. dollars only. I took several items out of my cart, so as to reduce my exposure to the rip-off rates.
For those who have the semi-toon character SuzyQ 2 in their Runtime I spotted the above outfit at Runtime DNA, for just $3.80 (and with Crossdresser 4 it should convert for the original Star).
Software:
The Poser content manager database PzDB 1.3 is down from $52 to $36. Still one of the best ways to wrangle a vast runtime.
Reality 4 for Poser and Daz, at just $5.99.
Poser 11 Pro – 65% off.
Poser Pro 11 Upgrade – 25% off.
Poser Pro 11 Upgrade (from older versions, back to V.6) – 25% off.
Corel has a big discount on Painter 2017, priced at $299 down from $429.
Vue? Autodesk Sketchbook? No sign of any movement from them yet.
Manga Studio Pro for $25? Yup. Although these days they call it Clip Studio Pro…
Hardware:
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 128GB + keyboard and pen, is available in the UK for £599.99 from the Microsoft Store UK, a hefty £259 discount. They’re clearing them out before the Surface 5 arrives in the New Year.
Lots of graphics cards and other deals in the UK, at Overclockers.
