13 days of Xmas freebies, over at Runtime DNA… Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
Meshlab 1.34 beta
Meshlab 1.34 beta is now available. Especially useful for those who need to convert a 3d model from an obscure or unusual format.
Update: Meshlab 2016!.
3dCutout
Here’s an interesting curiousity. 3dCutout semi-converts an installation of 3D Studio Max into a 2D animation studio…
“3dCutout converts Autodesk 3dsMax to a user-friendly software with bunch of new tools to help you create your own cutout animation.”
Although most people will be better off with the excellent and easier CrazyTalk Animator 2, which is built from the ground up for 2D, makes it easier to arrange props and characters in depth on the stage, and has an excellent royalty-free pre-made content system like Poser/Daz does.
A 3D Christmas Party
3D Art Live, online Xmas Party!
Wanderers
A beautiful new sci-fi short movie, Wanderers, from director Erik Wernquist of Sweden…
Nursoda’s Merpal for free
Nursoda is offering a free low-poly version of his new Merpal character, plus poses and expressions. The textures are also low, at 512px, but free skins are already available for this new character.
Feel the Xurge!
All of Xurge 3D’s famous Poser sci-fi and fantasy armour is half price throughout December.
Reality 4 released
The new Reality 4 is now available in both the DAZ Studio Edition and the Poser Edition. Reality is the high-end LuxRender rendering plugin, and comes in 32 or 64 bit format.

How to change your background colour in Daz Studio 4.7
For those wondering where the option to change the viewport Background Colour went in Daz Studio 4.7, it’s now over on the other side of the screen, in Window | Style | Customize Colours…
Don’t choose the top “Background Colour” option (that changes the User Interface colours), but choose the bottom colour named “Viewport Colour”…
However, even that won’t do the trick. What will actually show up at the back of the render is set in the Environment Pane, found via Window | Panes (Tabs) | Environment. There you can set a solid color or a backdrop picture…
While you’re wrestling with settings, you can also get rid of the hideous ‘orange flashing’ on a new install, which blasts your eyes every time the cursor passes over a model…
Update: at 2020 this setting is now found in: Draw Settings | All.
Then switch this drop-down to Bounding Box only…
Where to find Interactive Progressive Rendering in Daz Studio 4.7
If you’re looking for the most desirable new feature of 4.7, the “Interactive Progressive Rendering” pane, you’ll find it cunningly re-named in: Window | Panes (Tabs) | Aux View…
Even then Interactive Progressive Rendering won’t start until you tap the little arrow + lines icon in the top right of the pane. Enable “IPR”…
So far as I can see it’s independent of render settings. I had the render set for 600px, jacked it up to 3600px, and the Interactive Progressive Rendering pane was just as fast as before. As you can see here, it’s able to near-instantly preview water + reflections that are black in the OpenGL viewport…
Survey of new 3D content for Poser and DAZ: November 2014
So it’s that time of the month again, and here’s another survey of the most enticing and eye-catching new content published in November for DAZ Studio and Poser users. Most of the bigger 3D content stores now have some kind of Black Friday sale on.
Metropolis Tower could make a nice distant centerpiece for a city made of Stonemason’s new Greeble City Blocks 3 pack…
If you’re like me you already have a lot of medieval buildings in your runtime, and after a while they all blur into one another. But the new Medieval Watermill from Dante78 looks incredibly impressive, both in design values and detailing, like something out of a Samuel Prout engraving…
As usual, designer London224 doesn’t disappoint this month, with this curious hybrid that sits somewhere between steampunk and Syd Mead. The MS14 Spider Runabout. This is also available sized for Vue, at the Cornucopia store.
TheAntFarm has a new creepy character which looks like he’s just stepped out of a Doctor Who episode, Voir Pas Mal HD for Genesis 2 Male…
Spare Ribs for Chip is a sweet movies-quality toon skeleton. Also with a set of poses, Dancing ribs. Requires Chip!…
Songbird ReMix is known for his quality birds series for Poser, and has a new twin pack of Birds of Prey Vol 1 – Kestrels, Hobbys & Falcons and Songbird ReMix Birds of Prey Vol 2 – Hawks of the Old World…
The avalanche of clothing being produced each month is impossible to keep up with, but Study Time seems like a rare believable ‘everyday’ youth outfit…
Skyship Avrora looks like something someone could weave a children’s storybook around…
The Raft is a realistic Capt. Jack Sparrow style of castaway raft…
New from Nursoda is the characterful Merpal which has a free Merpalfur fur objects and materials.
The new Modular Living series, at Runtime DNA, offers a large range of upmarket studio-apartment rooms and furnishings… Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
And if you need a basement pool to go with Modular Living, then the new Urban Pool might suit you…
The preview renders don’t seem to show it at its best, but Biograph Odeon 1930s cinema frontage looks like an interesting addition for anyone interested in 1930s scenes or the history of cinema. I could imagine making a series with this, showing the frontage slowly decaying from its glamorous opening night, as a wartime cinema, then screening old 1950s sci-fi b-movies in the 1960s, to eventually being a seedy porno cinema in the 1970s.
The new Gatsby Dance Hall could serve as a matching 1930s deco interior for the Odeon cinema… Update: This appears to be one of the items which vanished with the demise of the RuntimeDNA store.
One for Poser is a nice freebie at Renderosity, with budding morphs…
That’s it!
New Nursoda character: Merpal
New Daz Studio 4.7 – out now
The newest Daz Studio Pro 4.7 is out now.
There seem to be some quite interesting and possibly important new features, which include among others…
* UI interface and navigation streamlining
* Interactive Progressive Rendering (IPR)… “see near real-time camera, light and material modifications”. Even moderately accurate WYSIWYG previews of the final render lighting would be a 1000% improvement on the old versions.
* “Back to Base”… an easy way to safely strip out all the modifications you made to a base character/figure.
* Render Settings Pane overhaul… an improved layout for this important panel
* Extended Texture Format Support… “Added support for using .EXR, .HDR, .PSD, and various others directly as textures.”
* Render Engine Update… “3Delight render engine to 11.0.105”. But this just seems to be a bugfix advance. The last important speed change was back in August with 11.0.101, which added… “Ray-traced subsurface scattering now uses much less memory and is 5% to 7% faster”.
Still free (for now), and still including…
