Survey of new 3D content for Poser and DAZ: November 2014

So it’s that time of the month again, and here’s another survey of the most enticing and eye-catching new content published in November for DAZ Studio and Poser users. Most of the bigger 3D content stores now have some kind of Black Friday sale on.

The preview renders don’t seem to show it at its best, but Biograph Odeon 1930s cinema frontage looks like an interesting addition for anyone interested in 1930s scenes or the history of cinema. I could imagine making a series with this, showing the frontage slowly decaying from its glamorous opening night, as a wartime cinema, then screening old 1950s sci-fi b-movies in the 1960s, to eventually being a seedy porno cinema in the 1970s.

Octane 2.0 released

The external render engine Octane 2.0 has been released for various 3D software, and has added…

* Displacement mapping.
* Faster hair and fur rendering.
* Better sky backgrounds.
* Motion blur.
* Region rendering (for making small test renders)
* Network rendering.

…and more.

Octane 2.0 is available for Poser 9 or 2012 or higher, DAZ Studio 4.5. Last I heard, a Carrara version of Octane 2.0 version is being worked on. All Octane users will need a newer CUDA-capable GeForce NVIDIA graphics card slotted into your PC, which for many will require fitting a more powerful Power Supply Unit than the puny one that shipped with the PC.

Free to students with a valid .edu or .ac.uk email address. Note that students are currently limited to the 1.2 version.

Black Friday round up

Ok, ‘Black Friday’ is here. Time to take a look at what’s on offer at the DAZ Studio or Poser content stores.

* Nothing on my wish list at Content Paradise has any discount on it, at the moment.

* Not much on my DAZ Store wish list is discounted yet, although there are a few discounts scattered here and there from 33% to 71%. I note that a lot of the Daz Originals environments and monsters are on heavy discount. The Steam Dragon character is a nice bargain at just $5.

On my DAZ wish list the Aslan Court interior architecture and its extensions and addons has chunky discounts. Carrara 8.5 Pro is also on a nice 50% discount at the DAZ Store.

* Renderosity has a couple of fairly light discounts at the cheaper end of my wish list. Nothing major though, and generally I’m really having to hunt to spot any “on sale” signs inside my huge Renderosity wishlist.

* Runtime DNA is a much better. They were the best and widest discounter last year, and this year about half my Runtime DNA wish list is on discount. Some of the discounts are quite heavy. The Sassafras semi-toon cat character is less than $10, which I’ll pick up along with discounted poses. Yep, it looks like Runtime DNA will be getting the big bite of my PayPal balance this year.

* Teknology3D has got the right idea, with a no-nonsense “50% off everything” one day sale. Including their merchant-resource clothing template kits for Sammy and Sadie…

* FoRender has a Black Friday vote on which item should get a 65% discount.

PZDB free upgrades – now supports new DAZ file types

If, like me, you use the excellent PZDB (my review) to find and load DAZ 3D and Poser content, then you’ll be interested to hear that there’s now a free upgrade patch from Rocketship.

Get PzDB 1.2.5. Warning: you will need to do a full reindex of your 3d collection after patching, so don’t update just before you start in on a deadline job.

It now supports those pesky new types of DAZ files…

“PzDB 1.2.5 now indexes and supports all current DAZ Studio filetypes, in addition, DAZ Studio files are now sorted among PzDB Categories as follows: DAZ files are still DAZ Scenes; DS, DSB, DSE, DSA, DSX and now DUF and DSF files are listed as DAZ Scripts; DSO, DSD, and DSVs are considered Geometries; DSI, DCB, and DBMs are listed as Materials; DBC is a Camera; and a DBL is a Light.”

It can also now double as an entertainment media index, since it now supports…

“AVI, MPG, MP4, MOV, and WMV files and … MP3, WAV, WMA, and FLAC files”

PzDB 1.3 Beta Testing has also started…

“The PzDB 1.3 Public Beta Test is open to all PzDB 1.X Licensees.”

Stonemason’s new Hutt

Stonemason is back from holiday with a new ultra-quality scene for DAZ and Poser, Desert Outpost. Nice science-fiction styling, and it reminds me a bit of Jabba the Hutt’s palace on the planet Tatooine in Star Wars.

Could be combined with the new Balloon Technomages, suitably recoloured in desert and grungy textures. The balloons could be the water-vapor capture technology for the arid desert fortress.

DAZ Carrara gets LuxRender

Are you a DAZ Carrara user, but jealous of the DAZ Studio and Poser plugins for the free advanced LuxRender 3D renderer? Well, now there’s a new Luxrender plugin for Carrara! It’s called Luxus for Carrara and has just been released, at an introductory price of 30% off. There are 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and it works on Windows or Mac.
