The popular free audio-editor Audacity has just released version 2.2. Audacity is used by many creatives, from animators to podcasters. Now handles MIDI files, autosaves-on-crash when recording, and has lots of bugfixes. Also new UI themes, found at: Edit | Preferences | Interface. Such as this one…

A survey of new content for DAZ and Poser: October 2017
Here’s my pick of this month’s new content, released for Poser and DAZ Studio. It’s slightly early this month, as I wanted to get the Halloween items in before Halloween is over and gone.
Science-fiction:
Sayomi Anime Outfit for G3F looks fabulously detailed and designed. I presume it’s fairly close to some famous-in-Japan anime character outfit, but I can’t immediately find which one.
System 50 for Genesis 3 Female.
Techno Render Room and glass throne.
Time Soldier Outfit for Genesis 8 Male.
Dushka Machine Gun by Cybertenko, for Poser. Would suit a steampunk makover, but that shouldn’t be too difficult to do.
The Silent City, with a nicely subtle retro-future edge to some of the details.
R2R Crash Landed by Coflek-gnorg, for Poser. A quick setup for a spaceship or UFO crash site in a desert, with a lot of presets. If you want a non-crashed version of the ship, the older Fighter Spaceship by Coflek-gnorg is very similar to the crashed one, but with non-crashed textures.
Coflek-gnorg also has R2R Thunder Road, which may interest Poser users who don’t have access to Vue’s atmospheres, and who don’t want to get into multi-pass renders + Photoshop in order to do depth-fogging. 16 presets plus terrain. Update: I tried and tried, and just could not get this working like the store previews.
Power Board is a powered super-skateboard by The ArtFarm, with poses.
Tactical Mask for Poser.
Fantasy / adventure:
A free complete “Retro Heroine 8 Outfit” for G8F, for your Lara Croft fan-art. From the same content maker there’s also a paid-for Retro Heroine 8 and The Gun.
Need some classic videogame-style baddies for Lara to fight? Midnight Skeleton for Genesis 8 Male plus Anatomy Pack and Boned Wings add-on.
The skeletons probably lurk in the Flooded Cemetery or in Purgation. Actually, you could probably have Flooded Cemetery become a courtyard setting for Purgation.
Character extras:
Body Hair for G8 Female, for DAZ Studio. Each hair is geometry, so I’m guessing it may impact render times.
Flotsam Hair for V4 for Poser, and for G3/G8. Could also double up as an undersea / alien creature.
Kitty meets G8F: the poses, for G8F and the HiveWire Housecat.
Historical:
Desert Robes for Genesis 8 Male.
Scythian Archers for Genesis 3 and 8, for DAZ Studio.
A free Fantasy Harp, with commercial use.
Villainous Lair, complete with V2 rocket.
New WW2 Anderson Shelter Poses for the WW2 Anderson Shelter for your London Blitz scenes in the Second World War.
U.S. Army Vehicles inc. Jeep and WW2 Submachine Guns, albeit seemingly without poses at present. Doubtless someone will make poses packs, though.
Old Theater Changing Room by Cybertenko, now upgraded for Poser 11’s SuperFly renderer.
British railways expert DryJack has a warmly Autumnal GWR Bloater Fish Van, made with his usual high level of detail.
Storybook:
HiveWire Whisper is a baby unicorn for the HiveWire Horse. For Poser and DAZ Studio.
Flinks Scary Forest for Poser.
Sayuri Hair for V4.
Fairy Shroom World from HD scenery specialist ShaaraMuse3D.
Toon:
Catula, a Dracula-style semi-toon for the HiveWire house cat. With a texture fix, could also work as an alien sci-fi cat. I like the Disney-ish side-profile too.
For matching fur types, look at the CWRW Black, White & Tuxedos for the HW House Cat.
Baby Barry, a kiwi-style baby bird for DAZ Studio. Could probably use a set of feathers.
Precious Lynx, which doesn’t appear to need a base such as last month’s Precious Deer.
GroBot, a super-flexible super-morphable new Poser toon robot character. In the large mix, there’s a nice cat-bot. Free, but apparently “doesn’t work properly” in Poser 11.
More Star! clothing this month, with Star Casual, for Poser. New clothing for the original Star! character.
Animals:
Sharks by AM: Hammerhead for Daz Studio.
PterodaustroDR by Dinoraul, for Poser. A sort of ‘demon pelican’.
Turn your DAZ Dragon 3 into a super-snake with Will’s Wyrms for Daz Dragon 3 (requires DAZ Dragon 3 morphs pack).
Landscapes and sea-scapes:
Need a home for your wyrms? New from Stonemason, Misty River Gorge, a gorge system with river and foliage.
Pitts Special Stuntplane for Poser, with extreme HD dashboard and other textures. Perfect for flying over your landscape renders.
Prefer to stay on the ground? Try The Private Garden by Stonemason.
And finally, I see there’s a new version of SeaVue for Vue, SeaVue 2017 which supersedes the previous SeaVue ‘second edition’. Same price, $20. It’s a collection that helps you make classic surface seascape pictures with Vue, with crashing waves and swirling foam.
That’s it. More next month.
New release: Storyboarder 1.0
A new free ‘open source’ software, Storyboarder. Lets you sketch storyboards, with lots of helper widgets and do-dahs. Nice clean user-interface, too.
Sadly it also has one of those “give us your email and we’ll send you a download link” things. Meh. So I haven’t downloaded, installed and tested. But it looks good, and you can’t argue with free.
According to a third-party blurb it apparently…
“allows the user to type a description in the sidebar and instantly get properly positioned 3D models, over which details can be added.”
Interesting, but there’s no info about things like 3D model import on the website? I couldn’t find anything there about 3D, importing .OBJs or their being some sort of 3D posing dolls inside the software. You can however change cameras to different shot types, and doing so forces your scene into a sort-of tilt to match the camera shot. Perhaps that was what was misunderstood to be “3D”?
For those less inclined to sketch by hand just to get rough storyboards, also look at DesignDoll 4.0, which definitely does work with 3D. Imagine a streamlined ‘Poser for comics artists’, dedicated to making the rough pencils for each frame.
So far as I recall Manga Studio also handles 3D well.
Of course there’s also Poser and DAZ Studio, and their real-time OpenGL previews, and Poser 11’s real-time Comic Book mode.
Muvizu is back
The Muvizu website is back again, the Glasgow company having been acquired by Hong Kong’s Meshmellow. Sales also appear to be back, with the £25 Muvizu:Play+ and various add-on packs, though the site appears to be little sluggish from the UK (presumably it’s now hosted in the Far East?). Muvizu is a real-time toon animation animation software based on the Unreal videogame engine, and pitched at a market segment that needs things to be easy-to-use.
New releases for DAZ and Poser: September 2017
Here’s my pick of September’s new content, released for DAZ Studio and Poser.
Sci-fi:
Prototype-X: Synthetic Limbs for G8F. An unusual cy-body makover for G8F.
Morphing Regenerator for G3F and G8F. Could probably also be re-worked as a cyber-vehicle, by adding a hover-ski beneath it.
A chunkier charger is Charger, an unusual power charging-station for your Genesis-based robots.
Spider Bot Mech from The AntFarm. Genesis 3 poses for pilots, and for the mech. An excellent superhero enemy/vehicle, I should think. Also look at Going Viral for Genesis 3 Male, in that respect.
Ultimate Shower, a sort of future-shower place.
The shower and loungers probably a base area for a team of Dolphin Island-style High Tech Scuba Diver for Genesis 8 Female scientists.
Totte’s Flyfishing set for DAZ Studio. Might be adapted to become part of a steampunk scene where an inventor of tiny mechanical bots is readying a fiendish micro-army.
Historical:
An authentic recreation of the Herculaneum Theater at Vesuvius, for Poser. Complete with interior spaces as they were when the volcano erupted.
Medieval Dinner Hall in the Beowulf mead-hall style.
Centurion and Aquilifer for Genesis 3 Male…
World War II U.S. Uniform HD for Genesis 8 Male, Uniform HD Textures and Stonemason’s Battleground.
A freebie canoe, Kanu. For Poser and M4. Commercial use.
Landscapes:
Biomes01: Forest to Desert for Vue. Three different landscape zones which shade into each other, and with the sort of enormous scale which Vue does so well.
Dryland Expanse for Poser, another photoreal set from ShaaraMuse3D, this time with 8192px textures! Plus Dryland Oasis. Lots of uses, from lizards and dinosaurs to desert warfare and Biblical scenes. Also likely to interest Vue users.
If you need something that’s similar, but looks more like The Hulk just visited, there’s also the new Demolished Aftermath for Poser.
Storybook:
Need an old storyteller or wise man? Old Chap for Genesis 3 and 8 Male and Expression Smoother for Genesis 8 Female and Male (sliders to either smooth or exaggerate the Genesis 8 facial wrinkles).
Flying Carpet by Cybertenko. Your classic racing rug from the Arabian Nights.
The Legend for Genesis 3 and 8 Female from Aeon Soul. Reminds me a bit of the bonemold armour in the videogame Morrowind.
Celestal HelmetHair for Poser, a helmet-as-hair that looks suitable for dragon-riders and snake-surfers.
Cave & cobwebs from 1971s. With a slightly stylised feel that should suit many semi-toon characters such as those of Nursoda.
1971s also has a new Swamp tree, which could form a centre-peice of the cave…
Also, the new Teen Josie 8 for Genesis 8 Female, suitable for storybook pictures and tales.
Toon:
Star Witchery, a new clothing set for the original Star! character.
Precious Deer for DAZ Studio, plus (or course) a lot of add-ons and morphs to make dragons and suchlike.
AnnA HD for Genesis 8 Female, gives G8F a Pinocchio-ish semi-toon face.
Animals:
Tyrannosaurus Rex 2, now with feathers, age morphs, more details, and a Gore Pack.
Fishes of the Ocean for Poser and DAZ Studio. With morphs, schools presets, and several species and sizes. Lightweight, so you can have large schools of them.
Free Round Glasses for Millennium Cat.
That’s it. More picks next month.
Muvizu caged
Sad to hear that the firm behind real-time 3D toon software Muvizu has entered administration…
“Digimania, the Glasgow-based animation software company, went into administration on April 18th 2017, making 14 people redundant.”
It had rather dropped of my radar, but it’s good to hear that the users have set up a Anizu as an alternative hub. They host the free trial. Apparently there’s no way to activate to the full latest version software after a fresh install, and old users moving computers need to make sure they copy over the old…
“file called playplus.lic found in C:\Program Files\Muvizu Play\MuvizuGame\Licence “
Anizu also has a copy of the last of the 2013 version free-trial in 64-bit, before a lot of features were locked down. I’m fairly sure that version was not time-limited, just slightly crippled. So that’s a good option for making short YouTube videos, until the new owner gets up and running and restores license sales for the latest version.
Apparently there was a purchase by a Chinese company “2017-09-10” and…
“According to Neil, a former Muvizu developer, the new owners plan to use the existing licensing system and hope to restore all existing Muvizu:Play+ licences.”
What’s new for Poser and DAZ Studio? August 2017.
Slightly late this month, my survey of the new August 2017 content produced for Poser and DAZ Studio.
Base figures and content:
The flagship Genesis 8 Male base (G8M) is out, and should be available for download from inside the Library of the latest DAZ Studio version. Key store add-ons are: Genesis 8 Male Body Morphs, Genesis 8 Male Expressions and Head Morphs. Of course, built on top of G8M there’s also the new Michael 8 base and a Michael 8 Pro Bundle.
Also in the ‘must have’ category is DA Rust and Grime Shaders, to easily lay grime and rust over the top of any existing materials.
Also fairly vital — for Look At My Hair users — is the new LAMH 2 Iray Catalyzer. Note that… “All Alessandro_AM’s animal libraries have been updated for iRay/Catalyzer compatability. Make sure to download the free updates!”
Science-fiction:
MDD Nymia for V4.2 for Poser, from quality character-maker Maddelirium.
VYK_Teyla for G8F for DAZ Studio.
Ghost, wireframe, and Cortana for Pauline, a set of free hologram MATs for the flagship female character which ships free with Poser 11.
Single Man Light Aircraft for DAZ Studio, from a new name to me, Sareth. Nice, lots of details and moving parts, quality texture sets. I hope we’ll get more sci-fi from him in future.
Aava: Alien Species for Genesis 3 Female.
Man-Tank by Cybertenko for Poser. Which also integrates with his RetroBot character to create an unusual Tankbot.
Steampunk:
Ragnarok Mask for Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 Female. Poser creatives have had this for many years, but now it comes to DAZ.
Hinky’s Spect-Occulars – Steampunk Eyes for Genesis 8.
Need steampunk or similar tattoos in DAZ Studio? How to Create Outstanding Skin Art Tutorial.
Fantasy:
Orkz: Triceratox for Poser, a sort of cross between a giant pig and an ox. Complete with war-gear.
Hordor HornsHelmet for V4 looks like fun.
A cute-but-robust small shield, though to get it you need the whole Dragon Guard Outfit for Genesis 8 Female.
Lernaean Hydra for DAZ Studio, with poses.
MortemVetus’s Rolf for M4 and Braided Hair for M4, for Poser. This is a Runtime DNA carry-over, now being re-released on Renderosity.
MortemVetus’s Dream Arborum figures. They appear to be static sculpts which were designed to showcase the TerraDome 2 plugin, but apparently they don’t require that. Another Runtime DNA carry-over, but new to me.
Historical:
MS17 Tudor Room for DAZ Studio from London224.
Authentic G3M Minoan era Mycenaeans and Sea-people for DAZ Studio.
The famous Trojan Horse from London224, for DAZ Studio. It’s been available for Poser for a while now, but this version appears to be new for DAZ.
Slavecloth for G3M in DAZ Studio. A free outfit and chain.
Smoking paraphernalia for Poser.
Storybook:
Inhabited Island by 1971s, for Poser. Vue users may also be interested in this.
Autumn Lamp by 1971s, for Poser. A simple idea, but done well.
Town Crier for Genesis 3 Male for DAZ Studio.
Morphing Wide Brimmed Hat for G3F/G8F and 12 styles and presets. Usefully generic, and especially so for storybook illustration. Doubtless there’ll be a ‘cottage garden and Edwardian styles’ set of morphs and textures soon.
Toon:
Boku No for Poser. Possibly of interest to those using flat lighting + the Comic Book mode in Poser 11, to make comics. Requires Anime Girl Sinon for Poser. She’s a standalone, so you may want check if she can take V4 or similar pose sets before investing.
Animals:
CWRW Orange Tabby for the HiveWire House Cat for Poser and DAZ Studio. In DAZ Studio it works with the free House Cat LAMH plugin preset.
It’s interesting to see that Dinoraul, famed for his high-quality dinosaurs, is now doing OBJ terrain sets fit for giant dinosaurs to roam across.
Deinonychus by AMLM plus an awesome Feathers Extension for Deinonychus.
iRay Alligator by AM. Not to be let into The Beach House!
Nature scenes:
ShaaraMuse3D’s Olive Grove, a high-quality scene for Poser which may also interest Vue users. 4k textures and subtle/believable tree design. Just add processional figures from classical times, and a dozen goats.
Flink’s Instant Lake for Poser and OBJ. Rather expensive, but I guess you’re also getting a lot of plants and materials in the bundle. Might be re-worked and given a materials makeover to become a shoreline rock-pool?
ShaaraMuse3D’s 3D Scenery: Oceanic Submersion, a big pack of quality Poser assets for shallow waters and rock-pool scenes. Not well served by its main promo picture, but it has hi-res textures and is also likely be of interest to aquatic Vue artists. Note also that “Some of the items also come in a down-scaled, lower resolution mesh (3-4k polys and 1k textures). These can be used to populate the scene with more detail.”
Luigi Marini has a new coral reef for Vue users.
That’s it. More picks next month!
Freebie: “can haz big fluffz?”
Free LAMH Presets for the HiveWire House Cat for Look at My Hair.
Poser and DAZ new content survey: July 2017
We’re into August now, so it’s time for a selected survey of what was newly released for Poser / DAZ Studio content in July 2017. Here’s what caught my eye…
Science-fiction:
Insectoid for Michael 4 for Poser. Definitely one for a 1950s B-movie scene or re-creating a cheesy 1980s Doctor Who episode. Your Insectoid could possibly be leading an army of the new The Flies.
Futuristic Glass Elevator and Building Kit from first-time content maker Chanteur-de-Vent. A big scene with props, and MATs for both iRay and 3Delight. I hope we’ll see more sci-fi from her.
A Salvador Dali-style Peeled Orange Skin Shader for Genesis 8 Female. I’m guessing you could also give this a hologram look, for a “teleporter” effect, with the help of the new holgram shaders for iRay?
Alien Place for DAZ Studio. Too expensive for impulse sales (if it had been an introductory $7.95 I’d have purchased it immediately), but it’s obviously very carefully done, and if the base can be stripped back then it could also be re-worked as a seaside rock-pool (aka tide-pool).
H&C Raincoat Outfit for Genesis 3 Male might be suitable for a rain-slicked Blade Runner-type scene, or a sort of Matrix-like picture.
Blade Runners for Genesis 3 Female is another clothing set that works for science-fiction.
Fantasy:
Djinn for Genesis 3 Female, for DAZ Studio.
Coflek-Gnorg’s Choker Necklaces: Snakes for V4, for Poser.
A nice chunky slightly-toonish Fairytale portal from 1971s, for Poser.
I don’t need yet another dragon slumbering in my runtime, but the new Crystal Dragon’s Crystal Dragon Lair seems a useful base for something more elaborate. Some Wild Arums might make the floor look less barren, if re-coloured in suitable colours to match the crystals. A few luminous mushrooms too.
Storybook:
Lepus M4 V4 K4, for Poser. Plus horns. You can probably find and fit your own M4 eye-patches and side-whiskers, to make piratical / steampunk bunnies.
Wow, Genesis 8 really is flexible! V8F can turn into a Mrs Tiggywinkle style Ms Hedgehog, a cute hedgehog. She also has a car to drive to the shops in.
The Poser Meowl is now also available for Daz Studio.
EQ Bambino for Poser 11 and EQ Dwarf for Poser 11. Both freebies with poses and commercial use, which is very generous of Elleque given that these are store-quality characters. EQ Dwarf is somewhat similar to the original Peter Rabbit, but nowhere near close enough (I’ve looked) to cause copyright problems — so long as you’re not calling your rabbit character “Peter Rabbit”. He toons up very nicely in Poser 11’s comic book mode…
Coflek-Gnorg accidentally inhaled some sparkly pixie-dust and made a herd of Fluffy Unicorns for Poser. He’s fine again now.
Historical:
Cybertenko’s Desert Rats, complete Second World War uniforms and hats for the British Army 7th Armoured Division. And Cybertenko also has a Sten Gun Mk II. The hat would also give you a key part of a Moebius-style ‘Major Grubert’ character.
Minoan Era for Genesis 3 Female and Genesis 8 Female. With an unusual sort-of super-baggy trouser-skirt, that could be re-worked in lustrous fabric for science-fiction scenes.
Lovable Nerds Bundle plus Nerdy Girl Outfit textures.
i13 Warehouse Uniform for Genesis 3 Female.
Raine Bundle, late 1950s Hollie Golightly-style accessories for Genesis 3 Female.
Tongues:
Long Chain Rigging Tutorial. Figure rigging too complex? Start to learn the basics of rigging in DAZ Studio with something easier, such as a whip, tail, tentacle, or even a multi-pronged monster-tongue.
The Easy Tongue for Genesis 8 Female has got it licked!
Animals:
Salmon for Poser, lightweight so you can have lots in your scene, and it comes with seven morphs. I don’t remember seeing salmon for Poser before now.
3D Underwater Fauna: African Cichlids for Poser and DAZ Studio (iRay MATs). Light on system resources, so you can have big schools of them swimming through your scene. Also quite a variety of sub-species in the pack.
Giant Monster Spider HD for DAZ Studio. Peek at your peril!
Scenes:
Stonemason’s The Streets Of Venice and Gondola boat, and The Streets of Morocco. I’ve lost track of what’s in Stonemason’s “Streets of …” series, but I think these are new and not just iRay re-releases?
AJ Forgotten Place for Poser. Really simple, but very nicely proportioned and textured, and it seems like one of those highly adaptable scenes that someone might come back to again and again. Lots of space on the outside too, to show multiple monsters peering in at Halloween and suchlike.
You’ll find a few SketchUp-made 17th century English mansions for free, but not likely one that’s in ruins. Quality content maker London224 fills the gap there, with MS17 Moreton Corbet Ruin. Just surround it with a mob of swivel-eyed rustic fanatics waving pitchforks and burning torches, and add leaping flames. Likely to be of interest to Vue users, too.
Stained Glass iRay Shaders. Useful if you have some 1920s and 30s scenes in your runtime.
i13 Warehouse and Office and matching Poses for Genesis 3.
A sub-tropical Golf Course plus poses, caddy-bags and golf-carts. Also, older, a quality set of Golf Clubs. All for DAZ Studio.
Small Abandoned Church for Vue. In a somewhat Scandinavian style, with a detailed worn/abandoned interior.
Poseable Railway Bundle with 50 rail presets, for Vue.
That’s it, more picks next month!
Competition: Observatory Houses
As south Italian hill-villages depopulate rapidly, there’s a need to create new types of attractions to bring in tourists and possibly new caretaker residents. The “Observatory Houses” competition seeks young… “designers will have to create a story composed by stars, silences and landscapes. This story will have to include architectural elements designed to create a place beyond compare” for observation of the stars at the hill-village of Roccascalegna. Deadline: 27th July 2017.
Nice idea, but as you can see there’s a tight deadline and also a hefty entry fee. But note that they have a free public 3D model, albeit only in the difficult .DWG CAD format and not quite the same as they one they’re showing in the promo…
However I’ve snagged it before the competition closes and made a basic .OBJ conversion, import-tested in Vue. Three material zones, soil, buildings and roofs, which all take Vue materials nicely.
Poser and DAZ new content survey: June 2017
Slightly late this month, here’s my pick of the new Poser and DAZ content released since 1st June 2017. I’m assuming that everyone knows by now about the release of Genesis 8 Female and Victoria 8 for DAZ Studio.
Science fiction:
Nenana Alien HD for Genesis 8 Female. Fabulous Hollywood-quality from Josh Crockett, who did the excellent Robbus Goblin HD a few months ago.
Revo Hair for V4, and Revo Exposed for added colours and styles. Simple but stylish.
More funky future-fashion with Exoline Boots and Accessories for Genesis 3 Female.
Holographic Interfaces and Holographic Battle Charts for Poser, from Coflek-Gnorg.
Fusion Engine Room. Just add di-lithium crystals.
SpaceTech: Landing Platform for Poser, nicely detailed by 3-d-c.
The AntFarm’s Anti-Gravity Office Space is a standalone, and doesn’t require his previous anti-grav content.
Pd Poison for Genesis 3 Female offers unusual G3F skins.
Alpha Centaur for Centaur 7 Male, an alien-style centaur. Requires the base Centaur 7 for Genesis 3 Male.
A quality leather X-Fashion Kitty Girl Outfit for Genesis 3 Female.
Steampunk:
In what looks like it might be the first in a series, Sixus1 does steampunk with Aftermath: The Admiral for G3F.
Some Fascinators for Dawn for Poser, including an unusual steampunk-ish hat.
Harmonica Pistol and Old Repeaters from Cybertenko.
Historical:
Tommy Atkins from Cybertenko, a humble British ‘Tommy’ of the Second World War. For M4 in Poser.
Workers cottages of the English rural sort, from DryJack.
Cafe Racer, a vintage motorbike racing helmet for Poser.
Wooden Bleachers in the American style, and matching Crowd Reaction Poses.
Practical Archeology has Raiders of the Lost Ark -style poses, weapons and tools. Could work well the Gold Prospecting Equipment, also new this month, which has boxes of dynamite, shovels and suchlike.
Fantasy:
Fairy Bridge by 1971s.
DA Unicorn for DAZ Horse 2.
PBReal Blood Demon for Genesis 3 Female, which requires the Dark Fantasy Add-Ons for Genesis 3 Female.
Book of Souls and Book of Souls Add On for Poser.
Lumen Tenebris candlestick, and Illuminantis Libris candles for Poser.
Draconic Rising for Genesis 3 Female, a dragon-rider outfit with an especially stylish helmet.
A Titan Quest-style The Temple of Anubis, complete with “Attack” pose sliders for the statues.
Fantasy Throne Room for DAZ Studio.
People:
Tatsu for Genesis 3. A distinctive new face and character.
Maria G8F, a highly detailed and characterful new older woman for G8.
Outfit for G3F, a useful simple office suit.
Molly HD for Genesis 3 Female which requires the Growing Up for Genesis 3 morphs.
Nerdy Glasses for Genesis 3 and 8.
Fed up with searching for the eye controls among a zillion other sliders in DAZ Studio? Eye Clock Pose Control for Genesis 3 Male and Female, plus it’s claimed it “will adjust the eyelids automatically to keep the gaze natural looking”.
A Free Belly Button Morphs for Genesis 3, and Belly Button Morphs for Genesis 8 Female.
Also Sign Language Greetings as aniBlocks and Poses for G3F. The same maker has a range of other Sign Language pose packs.
Creatures:
aniBlocks for Millennium Cat and Run AniBlocks for Millennium Horse.
Handmade Old Doghouse, which could also add clutter to an Anglo-Saxon or Celtic settlement in an overhead picture. I guess it could also double as a medieval henhouse.
Toons:
Morpheus for G3M, a stylish movie-quality semi-toon set of guys. Plus a superb Strongman for Morpheus and a Toon Super Guy Suit.
The Hungry Plant, which looks a bit basic but it might work well tooned-up in Poser 11’s Comic Book mode.
A set of free Cupcake Expressions for the Cupcake toon cat.
A toon-ish little Seahorse, a stand-alone for DAZ Studio. I’m not sure how dynamic it is, but I seem to remember that they don’t do much more than flutter their fins and curl their tails.
A new dress for Mavka. Apparently it’s been specially commissioned by a Mavka fan. I like the idea of that. Perhaps we need a dedicated Poser/DAZ Kickstarter-style site which would aggregate donations for similar project ideas, to sustain much-loved older figures?
Places:
AJ Floating House for Poser, and also likely to be of interest to Vue users.
Recording Studio and Guitar and Microphone with poses for G8F.
Mediterranean Courtyard and Towers.
The Streets Of The Wild West by Stonemason, with his usual high quality.
Nature:
Flinks Instant Meadow 3. Plus Flinks Instant Meadow 3 – Small Parts and More Small Parts and Flinks Dandelion, for Poser.
TruForms Jungle for Poser. OBJs available “on request”.
Oskarsson’s The Forgotten Park for DAZ Studio.
Vue users have Green Canyon, a classic ‘Lost World’ type of scene. Also a Green Valley hamlet which I guess is sort of a ‘the Green Canyon a million years later’, which suggests some sort of time-travel story that would link the two scenes.
David Brinnen’s Gritstone Hills, new for Bryce 7.
That’s it, more picks next month!
Elephants Dream – the .blend production files
I found the ‘open movie’ Elephant’s Dream production files and .blends, on a steady FTP server, in the form of a copy of the official 1.3Gb elephant.production.tar.gz archive file (2006). It expands to 2.4Gb, and has just the .blend files and the pre-vis animatics.
I’d downloaded it years ago, and still had a few selected .blend files from it. But the original big archive was deleted from my hard-drive long ago. All these movie production assets were issued under a straight Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 license, with a fully inclusive credit needing to be to something like: “Orange Open Movie Team with the Netherlands Media Art Institute and The Blender Foundation | www.blender.org”.
The elephant.production.tar.gz file has just the production folder with the Blender assets from which the movie was made. If you want to watch it then the 4K version of the final movie is on YouTube here, albeit with unobtrusive Chinese subtitles.
The movie’s Blender production files used to be freely and widely available, but then the archives began to slowly vanish over time. Currently, a larger 4.4Gb version of the (full?) production assets folders are now behind the paywall at the Blender Foundation’s Blender Cloud. I’m guessing from a screenshot that these folders also have the textures, isolated sound FX, the GIMP .xcf files, the full range of matte paintings (apparently the mattepaintings.tar.gz bit weighs in at 240mb).
If your broadband is slow, Archive.org has a browse-able unpacked version of the lesser elephant.production.tar.gz Blender production archive, at ../ED/production. with .blend files that download and open. I can’t guarantee that all of them will download and open, but the ones I tried did.
You may want to install an older 2006 or 2007 version of Blender to ensure full compatibility. Old versions will happily install alongside your current version, and haven’t yet been placed behind the Blender Foundation paywall. Though keep in mind that a newer version should have vastly better export, if all you want is the mesh + material zones.
In terms of audio there’s only a title medley audio .wav in the elephant.production.tar.gz file. But the movie’s audio was usefully somewhat split into different 5.1 tracks on the release, and the files for that are still freely available here as individual 5.1 channel .flac files, one per track. Not quite the same as having a folder full of all the foley work and FX, as one file per isolated sound, but still useful to have under Creative Commons Attribution. The symphonic music was placed under Non-Commercial.
Update:
This is a picture of the original Summer 2006 double DVD which contained the full 4.4Gb of Production files (elephant.production.tar.gz + all the rest needed to re-render the entire movie, expands to 7Gb). Apparently there was a Sept 2006 USA release on a single DVD, which also had the same 4.4Gb of Production files. So far as I can tell none of the production files were included on the later Imagion releases of the film to HD and Blu-ray. The Imagion releases were essentially advanced tech-demos for the then-new HD and Blu-ray formats, and all the possibilities they offered for interactive menus and the like.
Also, here’s the .zip of Jan Morgenstern’s symphonic music track for the movie, which was placed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.5 license. Still useful though, even under NonCommercial.
“Awww, sooo cute!”
There’s a new page on this blog, Stuff for free. Opening with a free version of the prehistoric trilobite which I found a few weeks ago. Converted from the legless Maya .MB format to .OBJ. Added legs, fins and the correct material zones, to allow you to apply your own textures. Also included in the package are some free Creative Commons materials taken from the open movie Sintel — use of these will require you to credit “The Blender Foundation” on your pictures.
I’m assuming that this one spends most of its time scooting among the dappled shadows of sparse weeds on the shallow seafloor, like those seen in this scientifically-accurate museum diorama, so the green I’ve applied may be camouflage…

A free 3D trilobite
I found a scientifically-correct base trilobite in 3D, made in 2003. Because… trilobites! One of the most famous fossil types. They ruled the earth for 270 million years, although the closest thing to a trilobite which most people encounter today is a cute little wood-louse standing on a wood-pile.
The 3D model appears to be the best available for free, and…
“features the basic properties evident in the species but no specifics of any of the many subspecies … as anatomically accurate as possible, based on current knowledge.”
Sadly the model’s in Maya 4.5 .MB format from 2003. But if anyone with an (old?) copy of Maya wants to convert it to .OBJ it seems they can. The model is OK for non-commercial educational use only, as per the original rights notice. There are various bits of software which claim to be multi-3D-file converters (3DWin5, PolyTrans, SAP Visual Enterprise Author etc) that can open .MB files, but I’m told they all require a copy of Maya installed before they’ll actually open an .MB file. I haven’t found any simple “.MB in, .OBJ out” utility.
And here’s a picture which suggests the coloration of your trilobite, and the sort of soft parts that don’t survive to be seen in the famous polished fossils…
We think of them today as hard and black and like an Alien face-hugger, but in their time they were perhaps as attractively coloured as modern-day cuttlefish can be.
There’s also an un-rigged $12 Trilobites Set for Vue, although it’s a bundle so getting it into your wishlist seems to be impossible. There’s nothing worth having for Poser and DAZ Studio.
Of course there’s also some on Turbosquid, but they also come with the usual ridiculously high Turbosquid prices ($250!) that appear to be aimed at big advertising and movie production studios.
