A fab new open access site called Paperity has ripped all the Springer.com open access PDF articles and metadata from hybrid journals, into a TOCs directory and article pages, along with a basic search tool. I also noticed SAGE Open while trawling through the 2,000 or so titles, but otherwise it seems to be wall-to-wall Springer.com. Almost all the journals are science, but here’s my filtering of just the arts & humanities journal titles (and, of those, the ones that currently offer at least some OA articles)…

American Journal of Dance Therapy

Since these are all indexed by Google, all OA articles from Springer are now showing up on JURN searches (if they weren’t already being brought in via JURN’s indexing of www.springeropen.com). I’ve also added the above journal links to the JURN Directory, with a “(via Paperity)” rider.

Removed most of http://www.academia.edu from JURN. It has been getting way too spammy for some time now, even with my use of exclusion URLs to remove the bulk of CVs, and it increasingly dominated JURN search results to the detriment of journals. Overall quality also seems to be suffering.
For now, I’m keeping just the academia.edu “Documents in…” thematic collection pages [ via http://www.academia.edu/Documents/in/*_* ] since they don’t clutter/dominate the JURN results.

Thanks to various open journal suggestions I’ve picked up from Andrew Farke at Integrative Paleontologists and Sauropod Vertebra Picture of the Week, and my own searches, JURN is now a pretty good search tool for finding free/open research on dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures and fauna.

Removed International Journal of Maritime History, which was free from SAGE until the end of April 2014.
Checked on the free status of Journal for the History of Astronomy. This journal is currently stated by SAGE to have an unspecified free trial period for its first issue (Feb 2014). Highwire lists it as a wholly “free site”.

I’m considering adding the vast archive of the BBC Radio’s uniformly excellent In Our Time round-table discussions to JURN. However, I’m unsure if these can be accessed by listeners outside of the UK? Can readers of this blog post a comment, please, if they can listen to and download these programmes from outside the UK?
Sadly the BBC uses an undifferented/gibberish URL structure for its per-programme records. Its record page for its latest show on Tristram Shandy, for instance, is at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0418phf But the index of In Our Time could be indexed in a basic way in JURN, via the URL for the A-Z listing pages: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/in-our-time/archive/*/all (where * is a wildcard)

Ok, I’m calling the recent big expansion and ‘spring cleaning’ of JURN complete. If anyone wishes to publicise this fact, perhaps to their newsletter readers or social networks or blogs, here’s some news blurb…
News, 25th April 2014: Jurn.org search-tool expands in scope
The open access search tool Jurn.org has just completed a significant expansion, undertaken throughout March/April 2014. Jurn.org had previously only indexed its core collection of over 4,000 arts and humanities ejournals, all open access or otherwise free. The new Jurn.org expansion has now added a large intake of business and law, science, biomedical and ecology related open access ejournals. Also new to Jurn.org are full-text theses at selected academic repositories, with an initial focus on including the bulk of the larger UK research repositories. Jurn.org has been built by hand, and highly curated, over a period of five years. Jurn is non profit and ad-free.
