SHERPA REF Beta is an open access compliance checking tool.

It seems that some universities are in for a rude awakening as they prepare for the next REF. According to the Wellcome Trust, 54% of Wiley’s hybrid OA articles published in 2014-15… “are non-compliant with terms of grant funding”. Across all publishers, 30% that Wellcome paid to be OA were not made OA in a REF-valid manner.

The Economist has a new monthly magazine for long-form high-quality writing, 1843, which replaces their previous Intelligent Life title. Free, for now, although I vaguely seem to remember that Intelligent Life wasn’t paywalled. There are also a few daily bits, to keep the search-engines nibbling…

Across America in a single-engine plane

The long lead story in the latest edition of The Atlantic seems to vindicate my choice of topic for the first JURN donationware magazine template. My magazine template provides a ready-made vehicle for a large American town intent on reviving itself and hauling itself up by its own bootstraps, a print vehicle potentially able to reach residents who live far outside the orbit of things like social media and fast broadband.

The Atlantic article is certainly not PrairyErth in either depth or lyricism, but “How America Is Putting Itself Back Together” makes for an interesting long read and is full of fresh facts…

“Most people in the U.S. believe their country is going to hell. But they’re wrong. What a three-year journey by single-engine plane reveals about reinvention and renewal.”

There’s a handy new linked list of Open-access articles in the Communications of the ACM, as of 14th March 2016. Added to JURN, though it’s not showing up yet — the page is currently too new to be indexed in Google.
