Burtons Mineral Waters

“Burtons Mineral Waters of Hanley”, Stoke-on-Trent. Local makers of Ginger Wine, and a maker who appears to be utterly unknown now except for this beermat on eBay and one mention in a trade magazine. I have a taste for ginger ale, so I’m interested to find a local connection. There seems to have been quite a trade at one time, in mineral and soda water making in the Potteries. But this appears to be a very late example, from the early 1970s given the mention of saccharin.

Hi, found an old glass bottle of theirs. Labelled ‘Victory works’. Clear glass, rubber stopper. Don’t suppose you know anything as I can’t find anything about them either!

  2. My mum was Elaine Burton, daughter of John Burton who founded the company at some point in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The company was taken over by (I think Bass) in 1973/74. I assume it carried on for a bit longer before being absorbed into the Bass company proper. As a child I remember it employing about 100 people in a factory where the lemonade was made, and a depot where it was stored and transported on a fleet of lorries. Burtons was one of a hundred or more local soft drink companies that existed in Britain and which disappeared in the 1960s and 70s.

I am the granddaughter of John Burton the last owner of Burtons mineral waters. As far as I am aware my great grandfather started the company. They made a range of soft drinks that I remember as we would have pop in their house and be given a few crates to take home with us after a visit. I remember ‘Rikki’ which was an orange fizzy drink and the various flavours of. Hubbly Bubbly‘ including cola, raspberry & lime.
