The novel The Spyders of Burslem envisages the town in 1869 being alive with the tapping of wooden clogs on hard cobbles. Some may imagine them as sort of like Dutch clogs, but they would have been more like these, on show in the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. Since the gallery is not allowed to show anything that’s not from Staffordshire, they must be authentic ‘county clogs’. Note the thick carved wooden soles.
