There&#8217;s a book on that, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/acprof:oso\/9780198208877.001.0001\/acprof-9780198208877\">Providence in Early Modern England<\/a><\/em> &mdash; which has a chapter on mysterious signs and portents associated with providence&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfordscholarship.com\/view\/10.1093\/acprof:oso\/9780198208877.001.0001\/acprof-9780198208877-chapter-5?rskey=CLHB5k&amp;result=1&amp;q=paradigms\">&#8220;\u2018Tongues of Heaven\u2019: Prodigies, Portents, and Prophets&#8221;<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> it<em> was<\/em> a free chapter when I linked it, but now seems to be paywalled!  Sorry about that.
