{"id":63989,"date":"2024-05-05T02:54:23","date_gmt":"2024-05-05T02:54:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/?p=63989"},"modified":"2024-05-03T11:23:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T11:23:58","slug":"kiplings-sf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/index.php\/2024\/05\/05\/kiplings-sf\/","title":{"rendered":"Kipling&#8217;s SF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More on Kipling&#8217;s &#8220;A.B.C.&#8221; world, from his &#8220;With The Night Mail&#8221;, which I&#8217;ve mused on before at <em>Tentaclii<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Stories in John Brunner&#8217;s collection of Kipling&#8217;s SF, here listed in the book&#8217;s order and linked to the stories at the Kipling Society&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/a-matter-of-fact.htm\">&#8220;A Matter of Fact&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-ship-that-found-herself.htm\">&#8220;The Ship That Found Herself&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/%C2%B7007.htm\">&#8220;.007&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/wireless.htm\">&#8220;Wireless&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/with-the-night-mail.htm\">&#8220;With the Night Mail&#8221;<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/as-easy-as-a-b-c.htm\">&#8220;As Easy as A.B.C.&#8221;<\/a> (partial sequel to &#8220;Night Mail&#8221;).<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/in-the-same-boat.htm\">&#8220;In the Same Boat&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>SF Encyclopedia<\/em> also talks of the Kipling collections <em>The Day&#8217;s Work<\/em> and <em>Many Inventions<\/em>. Going through the Kipling Society summaries I find that the first of these books had two ship \/ sea stories adjacent to the technical steampunk &#8216;air power \/ A.B.C.&#8217; world depicted in the seminal &#8220;Night Mail&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-devil-and-the-deep-sea.htm\">&#8220;The Devil and the Deep Sea&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/bread-upon-the-waters.htm\">&#8220;Bread upon the Waters&#8221;<\/a>. In the second there are another two in this vein, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/judson-and-the-empire.htm\">&#8220;Judson and the Empire&#8221;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-disturber-of-traffic.htm\">&#8220;The Disturber of Traffic&#8221;<\/a>. Not SF, but they might be tweaked into being A.B.C. tales?<\/p>\n<p>Others with more SF tinges, suggested by the <em>SF Encyclopedia<\/em> and passing the test of my checking against the Kipling Society summaries, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-finest-story-in-the-world.htm\">&#8220;The Finest Story in the World&#8221;<\/a> (past lives), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-army-of-a-dream.htm\">&#8220;The Army of a Dream&#8221;<\/a> (part one) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/the-army-of-a-dream-2.htm\">&#8220;The Army of a Dream&#8221;<\/a> (part two) (imagines a highly militarised society, akin to an Edwardian <em>Starship Troopers<\/em>), and the late tale from 1930 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiplingsociety.co.uk\/tale\/unprofessional.htm\">&#8220;Unprofessional&#8221;<\/a> (cyclical cosmic waves affect organisms on earth).
