By M.D. Mason, dated and issued in 1896, it shows the layout of central Providence as it was when Lovecraft was about six years old. Lovecraft&#8217;s College Hill is just out of sight, off the left hand side of the picture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"369\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-62767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet-528x369.jpg 528w, https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet-768x536.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence-and-inlet-1536x1072.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finding it on eBay led me to the same picture plastered with watermarks at the stock-shovel site Alamy. This at least gave me the proper title &#8220;View of the city of Providence as seen from the dome of the new State House&#8221;. From there I found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/75696565\/\">the inevitable Library of Congress public-domain source<\/a>. It turns out it was issued as a supplement to the local newspaper, and thus the young Lovecraft almost certainly saw and perused it closely. Thus imbuing an early sense of his city as closely connected to the illimitable ocean.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence1896loc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/providence1896loc.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"403\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-62772\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He may even have seen the same view later, from the State House.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d not seen this one before, and it gives a pleasing sense of the oceanic nature of Lovecraft&#8217;s city.
