Simak.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2016 Michael May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelmay.online\/2016\/08\/the-call-from-beyond-hp-lovecraft-and.html\">appreciated &#8220;The Call from Beyond&#8221;<\/a> for its Lovecraft derived ideas and links&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The May 1950 issue of Super Science Stories has a Simak story called &#8220;The Call From Beyond.&#8221; The very title rings of Lovecraft&#8217;s &#8220;From Beyond&#8221; and &#8220;The Call of Cthulhu.&#8221; [&#8230;] He obviously had a lot of fun with the Lovecraftian elements, though they made the story unsellable to John W. Campbell at Astounding. Thus [it appeared in] <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/Super_Science_Stories_v06n04_1950-05_oak-wmfs\/page\/n55\/mode\/2up\">Super Science Stories<\/a><\/em>, a crappy low-pay mag.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although be warned of May&#8217;s huge plot-spoilers. He recounts the entire plot including the finale. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/callbeyond1950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/callbeyond1950.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"385\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-59200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/callbeyond1950.jpg 1318w, https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/callbeyond1950-528x385.jpg 528w, https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/callbeyond1950-768x561.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite its super illustrations, the story is not one of Simak&#8217;s best. But it was written in the late 1940s and at that point he was only a few years into writing some good and enduring SF tales.
