{"id":58712,"date":"2023-03-01T03:03:18","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T03:03:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/?p=58712"},"modified":"2023-03-01T19:43:49","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T19:43:49","slug":"the-man-with-a-thousand-legs-1927","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/index.php\/2023\/03\/01\/the-man-with-a-thousand-legs-1927\/","title":{"rendered":"The Man with a Thousand Legs (1927)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New on Librivox, a public domain reading of Frank Belknap Long&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/librivox.org\/the-man-with-a-thousand-legs-by-frank-belknap-long\/\">&#8220;The Man with a Thousand Legs&#8221;<\/a> (<em>Weird Tales<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/WeirdTalesV10N02192708\/page\/n75\/mode\/2up?view=theater\">August 1927<\/a> &mdash; warning: full-view header illustration is a plot-spoiler).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/long1927.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/long1927.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"320\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58722\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230; a completely unrepentant shocker from 1927 that calls itself &#8216;The Man with a Thousand Legs&#8217; and lives 100 percent up to its title.&#8221; (<em>The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction<\/em>, 1973)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230; that marvel of many viewpoints, &#8216;The Man with a Thousand Legs'&#8221; (<em>Pulp Magazine Thrillers<\/em>, 1998)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230; we must remember it was written in 1927, and is rather good SF for that period&#8221; (<em>Luna Monthly<\/em>, 1972)<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years ago <em><a href=\"https:\/\/darkworldsquarterly.gwthomas.org\/frank-belknap-longs-the-man-with-a-thousand-legs\/\">Dark Worlds Quarterly<\/a><\/em> had a long appreciation and summary of the tale. The tale&#8217;s fragmentary pieced-together structure and its <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/WeirdTalesV10N02192708\/page\/n75\/mode\/2up?view=theater\">opening illustration<\/a> (see that full heading after reading the tale) might seem at first glance to be bouncing off a reading of Lovecraft&#8217;s &#8220;The Call of Cthulhu&#8221;. Although to <em>Weird Tales<\/em> readers it might have appeared that the February 1928 published &#8220;Cthulhu&#8221; was actually following Long, rather than other way around.<\/p>\n<p>As <em>Dark Worlds<\/em> usefully points out there was a later slightly revised version of &#8220;The Man with a Thousand Legs&#8221; in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/MagazineOfHorror01V01n01196308\/page\/n5\/mode\/2up\">Magazine Of Horror And Strange Stories<\/a><\/em> (August 1963), which removed a few touches that made it sound dated in the early 1960s. Later it was included in the Arkham House collection of Long&#8217;s stories, <em>The Rim of the Unknown<\/em> (1972).
