He once had this card (or one very like it). I think it arrived from Paris and was sent by his young friend Galpin, though I could be wrong about that. Anyway he remarked, in a letter I recently read, on the very close resemblance of the painting to his elderly friend and adventure writer Everett McNeil. Then living in the slum of Hell&#8217;s Kitchen, New York City. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/france-paris-louvre-ghirlandajo-vieillard-et-son-petit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/france-paris-louvre-ghirlandajo-vieillard-et-son-petit.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"826\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49986\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though I should add that the good postcard promo-photo of the white-haired McNeil that I found (see my book on McNeil) shows no sign of the Innsmouthian nose-blobbling seen above.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, now on Archive.org &#8220;to borrow&#8221;, two of McNeil&#8217;s best-selling boys&#8217; adventure books. The librarians complained they were so popular with boys that (even with multiple copies) his books were almost impossible to keep on the shelves&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/shadowofiroquois0000mcne\/page\/n1\/mode\/2up\">The Shadow of the Iroquois<\/a><\/em> (1928)<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/shoresofadventur0000mcne\/page\/n1\/mode\/2up\">The Shores of Adventure<\/a><\/em> (1929)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/shores.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/shores.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"716\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-49988\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/adv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/adv.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"412\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-49989\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McNeil&#8217;s later books are still hard to find in open form, due to copyright renewals by a family member&#8230; who then failed to keep the books in print.
