{"id":27090,"date":"2019-06-20T05:33:48","date_gmt":"2019-06-20T02:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tentaclii.wordpress.com\/?p=27090"},"modified":"2019-06-20T05:33:48","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T02:33:48","slug":"podcast-subway-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/index.php\/2019\/06\/20\/podcast-subway-fear\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast: Subway fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the new <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pessimists.co\/\">Pessimists Archive<\/a><\/em> podcast, each episode outlines a mass panic about new technologies or products &mdash; a panic that sooner or later proved to be unfounded.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/evil.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/evil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"511\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27630\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listennotes.com\/podcasts\/pessimists-archive\/the-subway-piNn0Fy7G3a\/\">The Subway<\/a> episode seems relevant to Lovecraft and subways and similar tunnels.  For instance in &#8220;Nyarlathotep&#8221; (1920) Lovecraft has&#8230; &#8220;Another [column of people] filed down a weed-choked subway entrance, howling with a laughter that was mad.&#8221;; Pickman paints a study called &#8216;Subway Accident&#8217; featuring monsters climbing into the subway through a &#8220;crack in the floor&#8221; of the subway; and the climax of &#8220;At the Mountains of Madness&#8221; famously makes the comparison with a subway train. There was also Lovecraft&#8217;s general and growing dislike of subway travel when in New York, and then what appears to be his fear of using them by late 1925 \/ early 1926.  One can also see broad comparisons between subways and the various other tunnel networks in his fiction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/brooklyn-subway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/brooklyn-subway.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"793\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-27146\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For further reading, see my essays on &#8220;Lovecraft and the Subway&#8221; and the wider &#8220;It Emerged from the Subways!
