{"id":22119,"date":"2019-01-11T05:08:13","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T02:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tentaclii.wordpress.com\/?p=22119"},"modified":"2019-01-11T05:08:13","modified_gmt":"2019-01-11T02:08:13","slug":"sargasso-2-and-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/tentaclii\/index.php\/2019\/01\/11\/sargasso-2-and-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Sargasso #2 and #3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I see that <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GXWJAd\"><em>Sargasso<\/em> #2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2H9ENmj\"><em>Sargasso<\/em> #3<\/a> have appeared since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/index.php\/2013\/07\/02\/where-theres-hope\/\">I noted #1 in summer 2013<\/a>. <em>Sargasso: journal of William Hope Hodgson Studies<\/em>, is the quality scholarly journal devoted to Hodgson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/sargasso2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/sargasso2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A scholarly article in #2 may be of tangential interest to Lovecraft scholars. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.britishfantasysociety.org\/reviews\/sargasso-the-journal-of-william-hope-hodgson-studies-2-edited-by-sam-gafford-book-review\/\">full review of #2<\/a> usefully summarises&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scott Conner\u2019s \u2018Dust and Atoms: The Influence of William Hope Hodgson on Clark Ashton Smith\u2019. The long-held belief that \u2018The Night Land\u2019 [1912] was a major influence on Smith\u2019s Zothique stories is more or less conclusively disproved by the evidence that he hadn\u2019t read any Hodgson books until two years after the first Zothique tale [1932] was published. On the other hand, Scott Conner provides very convincing evidence that \u2018The House on the Borderland\u2019 [1908] was definitely a great influence on the writing of Smith\u2019s story, \u2018The Treader in the Dust\u2019 [1935].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Lovecraft himself only made&#8230; &#8220;the discovery, in the summer of 1934, of the forgotten work of William Hope Hodgson.&#8221; (<em>I Am Providence<\/em>, S.T. Joshi) and felt the work was rather conventional in terms of the philosophy it worked in. Lovecraft considered that&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He is trying to illustrate human nature through symbols &amp; turns of idea which possess significance for those taking a traditional or orthodox view of man\u2019s cosmic bearings. There is no true attempt to express the indefinable feelings experienced by man in confronting the unknown. &#8230; To get a full-sized kick from this stuff one must take seriously the orthodox view of cosmic organisation \u2014 which is rather impossible today.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I see that Sargasso #2 and Sargasso #3 have appeared since I noted #1 in summer 2013.
