The &#8216;canals&#8217; were then a current topic for debate, rather than crackpot-ery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/lovecraft1903-lunarcanals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/lovecraft1903-lunarcanals.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"840\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-20279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And his 1904 sketch observation of &#8220;The Gibbous Moon&#8221; seen through his rooftop telescope, showing the &#8220;streaks radiating from the principal craters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/mooncraters.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/mooncraters.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"646\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-20280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also notable among his boy astronomer papers is a drawing of Saturn from above, looking like a staring eye and: &#8220;It can never be seen this way on the earth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/saturnseen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jurn.link\/tentaclii\/oldimages\/saturnseen.jpg?w=529\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"672\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-20281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/repository.library.brown.edu\/studio\/collections\/id_680\/\">Brown University Library H.P.
