But had he glanced at the back of the latest new edition of <em>Popular Astronomy<\/em> in the library, he might have noted a wistful poem from nearby&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>THE OLD AMATEUR.<\/p>\n<p>What matters it that, weary and alone,<br \/>\nI sit and think of things I might have done?<br \/>\nWhat matters it that wife and children shun<br \/>\nIn me a dreamer, a mere rolling stone?<br \/>\nWhat matters it that rustic neighbors fear<br \/>\nIn me a madman, all because I know<br \/>\nThe motions of the comets and the flow<br \/>\nOf time, that travels on from year to year?<br \/>\nWhat matters it? There are far better men<br \/>\nTo count the days and aeons, as they run,<br \/>\nAnd weigh this planet that we dwell upon.<br \/>\nBut yet, I feel it matters somewhat, when&mdash;&mdash;<br \/>\nWhat matters it?&mdash;&mdash;I see, across the wire,<br \/>\nThe transit of the star of my desire.<\/p>\n<p>R.
