In the second half she has &#8220;Cobbolds&#8221; = <em>Kobold<\/em> work-fairies, which I have looked into <a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/2020\/11\/21\/your-tongue-is-strangely-changed-but-the-name-sounds-not-unfitting-so\/\">here<\/a> in relation to Tolkien.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FAIRY MEN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Trentham woods [&#8230;] I spied the fairy men.<\/p>\n<p>[<em>Various very conventional fairy troops are seen passing by, for five verses<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>Last the sad stooping cobbolds came,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;Through earth-holes small they creep;<br \/>\nWith patient steps they struggle up<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;The under ways so steep:<br \/>\nFor sins they are condemned to work<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;While other fairies sleep. <\/p>\n<p>They carry tiny water-pails<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon their shoulders small,<br \/>\nToilsomely in the under world<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;Work they to fill them all:<br \/>\nCatching each raindrop as it drips<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;Through their dark cavern wall. <\/p>\n<p>All night through fields and lanes they go,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;And deftly as they run<br \/>\nThey slip a dewdrop in each flower,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;On each grass-blade hang one,<br \/>\nYet dare not wait to see them turned<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;To diamonds by the sun. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A local poem of Trentham by Annie Keary, &#8220;Fairy Men&#8221;, written when living in Trent Vale, Stoke-upon-Trent in the mid nineteenth century.
