It is rather more lively that the above dry report of it suggests, and has vivid details of the characters and costumes involved.  <\/p>\n<p>It can be found in full in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/babel.hathitrust.org\/cgi\/pt?id=uc1.$b752594&amp;view=2up&amp;seq=198\">Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire<\/a><\/em> for 1851, with illustrations intact and un-stolen but with a gutter down the centre.  With the aid of the above smaller picture I&#8217;ve here tried to do a basic repair of the engraving in Photoshop&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/mock-mayor-newcastle-photoshop-fix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/mock-mayor-newcastle-photoshop-fix.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"471\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7454\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The original painting this was engraved from can be seen at the Brampton Museum, Newcastle-under-Lyme&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/stf_nul_pac_150_88-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/stf_nul_pac_150_88-001.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7476\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The short paper also has drawings of local &#8216;market hats&#8217; of the period (1830s)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/market-costumes-newcastle-under-lyme.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/market-costumes-newcastle-under-lyme.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"433\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-7458\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A summary of a paper on the topic, Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1851.
