But it seems that &#8216;generic&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/stream-name-maps-united-kingdom\">stream names<\/a> are, in aggregate, clear evidence of ancient territorial boundaries. Which is a very interesting finding&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/brook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/brook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"309\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4007\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>One can glimpse here the boundaries of ancient Mercia, the incursion of the Danelaw, and even spot the English speakers who settled into a little nook of Wales. Tolkien was fascinated by that nook, as a linguistic reliquary, and is known to have visited it.
