Staffordshire and Cheshire Landscapes in &#8216;Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,'&#8221;, in the book collection of essays <em>The Gawain Country: Essays on the Topography of Middle English Poetry<\/em>, Leeds Texts and Monographs series, 1984.<\/p>\n<p>The essay is not online, but the book may possibly still available by mail-order for \u00a39 &mdash; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeds.ac.uk\/lse\/ltm.html\">this order page<\/a> which dates from about circa 2011. (<em>Update: no, still totally out-of-print and not online, at early 2019<\/em>). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/2023-12-18_182422.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/2023-12-18_182422.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"733\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-14674\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also appeared as &#8220;Staffordshire and Cheshire Landscapes in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight&#8221; in the <em>North Staffordshire Journal of Field Studies<\/em> 17, 1977, pages 20-49.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/sir_gawain_and_green_knight_painting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/sir_gawain_and_green_knight_painting.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"sir_gawain_and_green_knight_painting\" width=\"640\" height=\"412\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, the pentangle on the shield (seen above) is not a pagan artist&#8217;s modern imposition on an ancient text, it&#8217;s something detailed in the text&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is a symbol that Solomon designed long ago<br \/>\nAs an emblem of fidelity, and justly so;<br \/>\n[&#8230;]<br \/>\nTherefore it suits this knight and his shining arms,<br \/>\nFor always faithful in five ways, and five times in each case,<br \/>\nGawain was reputed as virtuous,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Folio Society found a way to detach the symbol from its contemporary &#8220;naff hippie-shop pentangle&#8221; connotations, by ingeniously and elegantly making it more like a figure&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/s-l1600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/s-l1600.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4679\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s an essay on &#8220;Romantic Quest in the West Midlands.
