This relates to the Leningrad TV 1991 attempt at a TV adaptation&#8230;. &#8220;This paper aims to explore how what the Western viewers may find ridiculous about the depiction of the characters actually stems from the film-makers being inspired by traditional Slavic imagery and folklore.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>* In the new <em>ANQ: A Quarterly Journal of Short Articles, Notes and Reviews<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/0895769X.2025.2497087\">&#8220;Inkling \u2018Hint, Intimation, Suggestion\u2019&#8221;<\/a> ($ paywall, but first page free as a page-image). This examines the history of the word &#8216;inkling&#8217; from its earliest surviving use in a tale of Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.liberty.edu\/honors\/1465\/\">&#8220;Fantasy and Faith: Lewis and Tolkien on Magic in Fantastical Literature&#8221;<\/a> (2025), a final-year undergraduate dissertation for Liberty University. Freely available for download.<\/p>\n<p>* <em>A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry<\/em> blog has a long essay on <a href=\"https:\/\/acoup.blog\/2025\/04\/25\/collections-how-gandalf-proved-mightiest-spiritual-power-in-tolkien\/\">Magic in Middle-earth<\/a> and the various forms it takes (or might take, since some of it is only hinted at).<\/p>\n<p>* The book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4lXXqbR\">The War for Middle-earth: J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Confront the Gathering Storm, 1933\u20131945<\/a><\/em> is now seemingly set for publication on 17th July 2025, at least according to Amazon UK which is taking pre-orders for it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/tolk-warbook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/tolk-warbook.jpg?w=205\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-17474\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>* Tickets are now available for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmb.ox.ac.uk\/event\/2025-jrr-tolkien-lecture-fantasy-literature\">2025 J.R.R. Tolkien Lecture in Fantasy Literature<\/a> in Oxford, on 19th May 2025. Also, a new series of Oxford University Tolkien lectures will start in Oxford in May 2025 and will include &#8220;Tolkien and Arthurian Romance: The Interlace Structure of <em>The Lord of the Rings&#8221;<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n<p>* The Christian History Institute on <a href=\"https:\/\/christianhistoryinstitute.org\/blog\/post\/the-oxford-lewis-knew\">&#8220;The Oxford Lewis Knew&#8221;<\/a>, a new review of the sumptuous book <em>C.S. Lewis\u2019s Oxford<\/em> (2024). The review is freely available online.<\/p>\n<p>* And finally&#8230; new on Archive.org is a sampling of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/cd_wizards-and-demons-music-inspired-by-th_decameron-fat-mattress-fire-man-mike-co\/mode\/1up\">Wizards And Demons: Music Inspired By The Writings Of J.R.R. Tolkien<\/a><\/em>, plus scans of the cover and booklet with its musicological essay.
