Tolkien\u2019s Utopianism and the Classics<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Dr Lynn Forest-Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/lfhdramandmedievalism.wordpress.com\/\">blogs<\/a> that she has&#8230; &#8220;received the news that the new version of my translation of <em>Sir Bevis of Hampton<\/em> is now officially forthcoming in 2024. [&#8230;] the Introduction is completely revised to suit a wider audience, and extended and updated with my most recent research. The new edition includes a more extensive bibliography and footnotes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* The latest <em>The Imaginative Conservative<\/em> has a new article musing on <a href=\"https:\/\/theimaginativeconservative.org\/2024\/03\/screen-abolition-imagination-dwight-longenecker.html\">&#8220;The Screen &amp; the Abolition of Imagination&#8221;<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;padding-right:30px\">&#8220;my objection to the film version of <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> is at a more fundamental level [&#8230;] filmic versions of fantasy fiction serve to abolish the imagination. [&#8230;] you read his story [on the page and] <em>you<\/em> interpret it through the filter of your experiences, memories, literature, and learning. [&#8230;] This is the powerful covenant between the sub-creator of a fantasy world and the reader.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>* <em>The Family Tree of the Tolkien Legendarium<\/em> is back online, and this wall-chart now has its own expensive .com Web domain at <a href=\"https:\/\/lotrtree.com\/\">https:\/\/lotrtree.com<\/a>. Currently at version 8.2 (May 2024). Note also the link to the PDF companion guide.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/chart.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"409\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-15505\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>* I didn&#8217;t know that Arthur Ransome (<em>Swallows and Amazons<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medievalists.net\/2012\/10\/the-hobbit-sales-are-not-very-great-wrote-tolkien\/\">read <em>The Hobbit<\/em><\/a> after publication, and that he boldly suggested tweaks for the next edition. Tweaks which were actually accepted by Tolkien, with the proviso that there might not be another edition &mdash; since the book wasn&#8217;t selling well.<\/p>\n<p>* The 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/tolkien.soc.ucam.org\/Anor_60\"><em>Anor<\/em> No. 60<\/a> from the Cambridge Tolkien Society. Articles musing on sanitation and food-supply in Middle-earth, and the perennial question of dwarf-women. Freely available online.<\/p>\n<p>* And finally, Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3JSCYYm\">The Complete Norse Mythology<\/a><\/em> is now complete and in a deluxe oversized edition, with three volumes slipcased.
