{"id":13468,"date":"2023-07-06T17:26:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T16:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/potbanks.wordpress.com\/?p=13468"},"modified":"2023-07-06T17:26:42","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T16:26:42","slug":"two-stoke-canal-projects-announced-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/2023\/07\/06\/two-stoke-canal-projects-announced-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Stoke canal projects, announced today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Stoke canal projects were today announced as being newly funded by &#8216;Levelling Up&#8217; money&#8230;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Trent Rivers Trust &#8211; \u00a3189,993 to run the \u201cRediscovering the Trent Valley Way in Stoke\u201d project which will develop and deliver a variety of initiatives through Stoke-on-Trent along existing rights-of-way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interesting. &#8216;The Trent Valley Way&#8217; is a &#8216;source to sea&#8217; path for the Trent along public footpaths and canal towpaths&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Map One: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentriverstrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/TVW-1-Biddulph-to-Hanley.pdf\">Biddulph Moor to Hanley<\/a> (OS map)<\/p>\n<p>Map Two: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trentriverstrust.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/TVW-2-Hanley-toTrentham.pdf\">Hanley to Trentham<\/a> (OS map)<\/p>\n<p>So the communities there are likely to be Birches Head, Abbey Hulton, Northwood, Shelton, Fenton.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps also Boothen and Hanford&#8230; since it looks to me like the route could now use the river rather than the canal at Stoke-on-Trent, now that the city has the Boothen Ground path giving the new link through to the long riverside path to Trentham. Here&#8217;s the part of the map showing the existing Way (red) along the canal, and my suggestion (green) for a new possible &#8216;beside the river&#8217; route. This would however entail making the footpath from Hanford across to the canal passable and motor-bike proof. It wasn&#8217;t, last time I looked. Though that was some years ago now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/2023-07-06_164636.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/spyders\/oldimages\/2023-07-06_164636.jpg?w=579\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13470\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it&#8217;ll be interesting to see what \u00a3190k does, and if it gets match-funded to do more.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Canal and Rivers Trust &#8211; \u00a3109,633 to deliver a community-led placemaking project which will reach out to work across two waterside communities on the Trent &amp; Mersey and Caldon Canals.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Again, interesting. The &#8220;two waterside communities&#8221; could be anywhere. But if it&#8217;s going to overlap with the above Trent Rivers Trust &#8216;Trent Valley Way&#8217; project, and if the two communities are close together, then that would mean lower and upper Shelton.
