So it&#8217;s interesting that the new report <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectedkingdom.co.uk\/downloads\/bcg-the-connected-kingdom-oct-10.pdf\">The Connected Kingdom: how the Internet is transforming the UK economy<\/a><\/em> (PDF link) has an estimate of the value of &#8220;free&#8221; to online consumers&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We conservatively estimate the consumer surplus for free online content to be about \u00a35 billion annually, or twice what consumers pay to access the Internet.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d suspect that &#8220;conservatively&#8221; is report-speak for &#8220;we didn&#8217;t count piracy&#8221;?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We occasionally hear hard statistics about the wider economic value of open access in academia.
