It&#8217;s needed because the key UserScript <a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/01\/16\/new-script-google-search-in-several-columns\/\">Google search in several columns<\/a> has stopped working, due to changes in the Google page code.  Even with this script installed, Google Search reverts to a long scrolling page of links, a format highly unsuited to searchers who use a widescreen desktop monitor.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, the fix is to keep on running this script, but also run these two <em>at the same time<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>* Stylus UserStyle <a href=\"https:\/\/userstyles.org\/styles\/93103\/google-show-search-result-in-two-columns\">Google &#8211; show search result in two columns<\/a> and hack the script to show &#8220;3&#8221; columns.<\/p>\n<p>* Stylus UserStyle <a href=\"https:\/\/userstyles.org\/styles\/123849\/google-search-in-columns\">Google Search in columns<\/a> with &#8220;3&#8221; columns set on install.<\/p>\n<p>On a widescreen monitor, a manual fix the top of the Stylus UserStyle &#8216;Google Search in columns&#8217; also helps with overlap between results&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\n\/* columns  *\/<\/p>\n<p>.big .mw,<br \/>\n.s {<br \/>\n    max-width: <strong>unset<\/strong> !important;<\/p>\n<p><\/code><\/p>\n<p>to&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><code><br \/>\n\/* columns  *\/<\/p>\n<p>.big .mw,<br \/>\n.s {<br \/>\n    max-width: <strong>80%<\/strong> !important;<br \/>\n<\/code><\/p>\n<p>The result gives imperfect but reasonably acceptable three-column display for Google Search and Books results&#8230;  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/03\/search.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/03\/search.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/03\/books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/03\/books.jpg?w=500\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"264\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-23536\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Google &#8211; show search result in two columns&#8217; will need to be temporarily turned off for Google News results.<\/p>\n<p>Note that I have the UserScript <a href=\"https:\/\/jurn.link\/jurnsearch\/2020\/01\/16\/new-script-google-search-in-several-columns\/\">Google search in several columns<\/a> set not to work on Google Books, having added a couple of lines to the script.
